Vesper awoke in a starkly white, clean room. A hospital room. Her memory felt fuzzy, like a foggy window. She could make out shapes, and small details, but mainly she remembered James Bond. Her James. His beautiful clear sky blue eyes and sandy blonde hair, the memories of the two of them.
"Good, you're awake. Nearly thought we lost there." Vesper sat up slowly, she saw the elderly woman near her bedside. She recognized her as M, head of MI6. "You were resuscitated in the ambulance on the way here. You were under for more than 6 minutes, your heart stopped for 3. You've been out for 3 weeks." M said.
3 weeks. She had been in here for 3 weeks. "J-james?" Vesper croaked out, her voice dry from lack of use. She just wanted to see James and apologize to him, to explain what she did.
"We know everything. Bond believes you're dead, and it will stay that way. You are to never see him nor contact him again, under any circumstances." M stated harshly. Vesper could only nod. She would never see James again, they could never be together. They would never have that life they dreamed of, one away from MI6, somewhere quiet, maybe even with a few children. She squeezed her eyes together tightly, letting a few tears fall. She just felt so numb. "You may think me heartless, Miss Lynd. But you committed treason and I need Bond back. Now as you are legally dead, you will be given a new name, identity, papers, everything. You will still be a British citizen, and have those rights, but you may not travel out of the country. Understood?" M said, placing a Manila envelope on her bedside table. Vesper gave a slight nod. "Good. Your doctors have informed me that you will be released in a few days, a car will be waiting for to take you to your new residence. I'll be in touch." M said, leaving.
Vesper tried to sleep, but the painful memories and the knowledge of the Manila envelope made sleep impossible. Eventually, her willpower wore down and she opened the envelope, there was a British passport that contained her new name and identity, and from that moment on, she was no longer Vesper Lynd. She was Vanessa Lewis.
