After this, Merlin and Sirius become closer than ever, even closer than Sirius and James had ever been. They, eventually, fell in love with each other. But three days before the marriage ceremony, disaster struck. Merlin had suffered from heart problems since years back and he passed from a heart attack during the night.
Sirius had woken up to Merlin's strangled breathing, knowing something was wrong, and Merlin spoke his last words: "I love you." Sirius only had enough time to respond with an equally loving and sorrow filled "I love you to." before Merlin left the realm of the living.
Sirius mourned his loved one for a year, before Death himself appeared with a message from Merlin that said not to crack to the insanity of life and to instead challenge it on ahead. Sirius thanked Death for bringing him this message and did as Merlin told him.
Death gifted Sirius with the ability to speak the Tongue of Death, in thanks for having sent so many villains into the realm of the dead to be punished according to their crimes.
Over the coming years, Sirius watches everyone he came here with die, either by the hands of another magical person or by old age, while he remains behind in a still 28 year old body that will never again age.
But he continues on, honouring their lives through his continuous effort to save the muggleborns, both from other wizards and other muggles.
