So, you may be wondering why Light was left back in the 9th grade.

You see, in his freshman year, Light didn't do very well in all of his classes, mainly because he just didn't really seem to care about his grades. And when he was supposed to attend summer school, he didn't show up. Maybe it was because he had a short attention span. Maybe it was because he just wasn't interested in school. But nobody knew the real reason why he was failing.

So, that should explain that.

4th period living environment was the only class that Light shared with another person that he knew, Senpai. They barely interacted, mostly because they were seated pretty far away from each other. But that was going to change.

Teacher: Alright, class, today I'll be assigning you a project.

The entire class groaned.

Teacher: Don't worry class, you'll get to work in pairs-

The entire class cheered. After all, who wouldn't want to be with their best frie-

Teacher: -of my choosing.

Oh, never mind.

Teacher: Jeremy will be with Maria, Carlos will be with Mark...

Light then decided to zone out for a while. He didn't understand why he had to go to school anyway. What would he even use the knowledge for? Paying taxes? Getting a job? FINDING LOVE?! It all just seemed pointless to him.

Teacher: ...and Light will be with Senpai.

Light perked up at his name. He had almost forgotten about the pair assignment.

Senpai: Light! What a coincidence! We're partners!

Light: ...

Senpai: That's kind of funny, actually, considering yesterday, you know?

Light didn't really feel like talking to Senpai. He was way too tired.

But Senpai, being Senpai, was sure that he could get the purple boy's attention somehow.

Senpai: Light, do you think I'm handsome? Be honest.

Light: ...

Senpai: Does that silence mean that you do?

Light: ...

Senpai: *gasp*, YOU DO-

Light: Can you please stop?

Senpai: FINALLY YOU RESPONDED! I was starting to think you were ignoring me or something.

Light: Sorry, I'm just a bit tired today.

Senpai: *sigh* It's fine.

Light: We should probably do the project after school. Can we go to your place?

Senpai's heart stopped as he remembered that a literal VIDEO GAME was his home.

Senpai: Uh- No. My parents are very busy and aren't really uh... comfortable with me staying home alone. How about your place?

Light's heart stopped as he remembered that his room was a literal MESS and his parents probably wouldn't be very happy about it. But he knew that he didn't really have a choice, as there was nowhere else to go.

Light: Sure.

And so it was. The two boys met up at Light's place after school. Once they got there, Light got his keys and opened the door.

Senpai: Wow, it's actually quite-

And then chaos emerged.

As soon as they entered the room, the boys could hear Alex talking on the phone with a friend, the sound of the tv playing some sort of drama, and the mother.

The Mom: Light! You didn't tell us we were going to have guests over!

Light: It's okay, mama. We're just going to work on a school project.

The Mom: But look at the state of the house! We might get judged for it!

Senpai: I'm not that judgy, ma'am (THAT IS A LIE-)

The Mom: Still, I should've been informed that we were going to have guests over. I didn't even prepare food!

The mother then rushed to the kitchen to make some food.

Senpai: Is it always like this?

Light: Yeah, most of the time.

The two of them then went to Light's room, which wasn't any better than the living room.

Senpai: Uh, Light? What happened here?

Light: *sigh* I'm sorry. I never had the time to clean up.

Senpai: Never mind that. We should probably get started on the project.

The duo then started working on their project, but even after an hour, they weren't making much progress.

The mom: Dinner's ready!

Light: Coming!

Senpai: We haven't made a lot of progress, have we?

Light: *sigh* No.

Senpai: But it's fine! It's fine. We can finish it later.

Light: I guess so...

After dinner, the two of them continued to work on the project, Then after some time, they finally finished.

Senpai: *sigh* We're finally done.

Light: Yeah. We sure are.

Senpai could tell that something was wrong.

Senpai: Is something wrong?

Light couldn't hold it in anymore.

Light: It's just that... I don't really have motivation when it comes to school. I- I just don't see the point! When will we even use this stuff in real life?!

Senpai: Taxes?

Light: What are you talking about?

Senpai: When you do taxes, you're doing math.

Light: Oh. I guess I've never thought of that.

Senpai: And when you're shopping for stuff, you also need math.

Light: Oh...

Senpai: And when you have a child...

Light: ...

Senpai: You'll need to teach them this stuff.

Light giggled a bit.

Light: I guess you're right.

The two of them continued talking like that for a while, and Senpai eventually had to stay overnight.

A few days later, the grade for their project came in.

Light: No way....

Senpai: What? WHAT IS IT?! WHAT DID WE GET?!?!?!

Light: Woah, chill! We got an A!
