"We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it or why it came up here with you." The British boy, Newt, says.

We were alone with Alby along with the two medical boys, who are apparently called 'medjacks' for some reason.
"I mean, for all we know this thing could kill him." Newt says and I stay silent, staying behind Thomas.

"He's already dying." Thomas says and I glance at him. There was a big black dot on his chest, moving along with his veins. It looks scary. "Look at him." Thomas says and Newt turns around to look at him.

"How could this possibly make it any worse?" He asks and I see Alby moaning in pain, making me feel sorry for a boy I've never met.

"Come on, it's worth a try." Thomas tries and Newt agrees. "Alright, do it." He says and Thomas walks over to Alby.

We all stand there, waiting for him to do it. He looks at me, nodding. "Okay-" suddenly, Alby grabs him, clinging onto his shirt. "You shouldn't be here!" He repeats and I start panicking. "No!" He yells while the boys try to get Thomas off of him, I grab the remaining syringe and push it into his chest.

We all look at him, panting. He calms down and I look at the medjack, Jeff. "Well, that worked." He says and I glance at Thomas. "Okay from now on. Someone stays here and watches him around the clock." Newt says and I nod, watching Alby intensely.

"Hey." I suddenly hear Gally say and I turn around, seeing a concerned expression on his face.

"Sundown greenie, time to go." He says and I frown. "Where are you going?" I ask and Newt looks at me. "It doesn't matter. Long story short, he broke the rules." He says and I just give him a short nod.

"I'll stay here." I say, nodding. "Are you sure?" Newt asks, and I nod. "Yeah, don't worry." I say and he nods, leaving me alone.

The moment they all leave I take a long, deep breathe.

"The best way to remember is to sleep." I repeat words I didn't know who've told me and look down. I'm not sure why, but I feel like it was someone smart.

"Alby." I say, repeating the word in my head. "You're gonna remember, won't you Alby?" I whisper, looking at the empty syringe.

"I have a hunch," I whisper. "That we ain't gonna like the truth."

Once I've been taken over, I quickly fell asleep.

. . .

"You're name is Jane." A familair woman says to me. "Jane? No." I say and shake my head. "No that's not my name." I say and the woman sighs. "You're all named after people in history who have achieved incredible things." She says and I scoff.

"I'm named after whom, then?" I ask sarcastically and she smiles. "Jane Austin. Famous author." She says and I smile. "Cool. I guess. It's not gonna help that it's bullshit." I snarl and she sighs.

"You'll warm up to it." She says and I just nod.

"Look, what am I supposed to do? I'm not gonna act like nothings happened. I haven't seen him since forever." I say and she smiles. "We got a solution for that."

. . .

When I woke up, Thomas and Minho, another runner, were already gone.

I decided to spent my time getting to know the people here, the people Thomas trusts.

Newt, Chuck, Minho. Me.

I start with Newt, since he's the leader.

"Hi," I say and Newt looks up. He was sitting at a fallen tree. "Hello." He says shortly.

"I'm-"

"Oh I know who you are." He says, sounding annoyed. "Don't be such a bitch about it." I snap, sitting down next to him. I sigh, shaking my head. "I'm sorry. I'm new to this. It's not like I've been in other..." I start, not remembering the word for this place. "Glades." He says and I nod.

"Exactly. I haven't." I say and he nods. "Clearly." I smile. "Can you tell me about it?" I say and he does. How he's been here for three years, how Alby was the first one, how Chuck came for Thomas.

That there was never a girl here.

"Do you think it's true?" I ask and he looks at me. "What?" He asks, curious eyes on mine. "That I'm 'the last one ever'" I say and he presses his lips together. "Well, the box's still up." He says and I look at it.

"What if I go back into it?" I ask and he shakes his head. "We tried, last time, they didn't come back." I gulp, nodding. "Clear." I say and he sighs.

"Look, we've tried everything. I don't think you're going to come up with something else." He says and I glance around. "Don't underestimate me. I have a strong feeling I'm going to surprise you." I say, smiling.

"I don't like surprises." He says and I frown. "Just wait until we get out of here." I say and he sighs, shaking his head. "Newt, obviously I've been sent here for a reason. We're gonna get out of here." I say confidently.

"That's what they all said once they've arrived. And after a month they see a new greenie, after three they've got it and lost hope." He says and I clench my teeth before nodding. "Except you're missing one thing. There isn't going to be a new... greenie, or whatever you just said." I say and chuckle.

"What's up with these words anyways?" I say and Newt shrugs. "It's just a little language we've created, I guess." I nod.

All of the sudden everything starts rumbling, as if there's an earth quake. "Bloody hell..." Newt says, standing up. We all do, gathering around in front of the maze.

"This doesn't happen I suppose?" I ask and Newt shakes his head. "In the evening, but never at day." He says and I shudder. Everything's changing.

"There, there they are!" I see Minho and Thomas running, alive. "What the hells going on out there?" Newt asks and I look at them.

"Yeah, what did you do now Thomas?" Gally accuses and we all start walking away from the walls.

"We found something. A new passage. Maybe the way out." He says and I look at Thomas. Really? "Really?" Newt asks surprised.

"It's true, we opened a door. Something I've never seen before. It must be where the grievers go during the day." Minho says. Grievers? We're going into the griever den?

"Woa, woa, woa, woa, woa." Chuck says running to stand between the two boys. "So you're saying you found the grievers home?" He says making a point. "And you want us to go in?" That's ridiculous.

"Their way out could be our way in." Thomas replies and I sigh. Into their mouth, sure.

"Yeah, or there could be a dozen grievers on the other side-" Gally says and I can see on Thomas' face he does not like him at all.

"The truth is, Thomas doesn't know what he's done. As usual." He claims and Thomad turns around, an angry expression.

"Yeah? Well at least I did something, Gally." He spits out his name and I stop walking, watching the scene. "I mean what have you done? Huh? Aside from hiding behind these walls all the time." He says and I look at Gally.

"Let me tell you something greenie. You've been here three days. Alright? I've been three years." He says, making a three with his right hand.

"Yeah you've been here three years and you're still here! What does that tell you?" He asks raising his voice.

"Maybe you should start doing something a little differently-" he argues and Gally scoffs. "These walls offer a sense of security!" Gally yells and I scoff.

"A false one, gally. It's not real." I say and I see Jeff walking towards us. "Guys." He tries, but no one listens. "Hey! It's Alby!" He says while Gally is ranting. "He's awake."
