Sophie Selwyn was sitting on her bed when her Hogwarts letter came. It was her 5th year so she was quite used to receiving her letter around this time. However this year the envelope that carried her letter was heavier and had a bulge.

Sophie quickly ripped her letter open and out fell a slytherin prefects badge. Her letter gave her the details of how she had been selected to be the female slytherin prefect of her year along with a long list of supplies that she would be needing.

She ran downstairs to tell her parents, but they weren't there. They hadn't been there much recently at all leaving her all alone in her fairly large house. She knew that her parents were at Malfoy Manor most of the time; it was no secret that they were death eaters. She wasn't the most pleased at the idea, but being pure blood meant a lot to her family.

Within the next couple of days Sophie found herself in Hogsmeade along with many other of her classmates, including the Golden Trio. She wasn't too fond of them especially because of their house rivalry, but she wouldn't say she hated them.

She was lost in thought walking past the entrance to Knockturn Alley when she ran into something hard. Something blonde. Draco Malfoy.

"Watch it Selwyn," he spat.

Sophie of course knew her fellow Slytherin, how could she not. Practically every Slytherin girl would fawn over him, but of course nobody would cross Pansy Parkinson. She did have to admit that he was attractive, okay, outright bloody gorgeous, but she never was one to hang around him just for the sake of maybe catching his attention. She in fact was surprised he even knew her name. She had spoken maybe two words to Draco the entire time she was at Hogwarts and it didn't help that he was a year older than her.

As she watched him walk off with Narcissa she couldn't help but notice how weird he was acting. He had been looking over his shoulder as if he didn't want someone specific to see him. Sophie chalked it up to the fact that his father had been sent to Azkaban and that he was having to deal with the Dark Lord in his house every day.

The ride to Hogwarts wasn't the most exciting. She sat with her best friend Emory, but they hardly talked. Emory was always there for her, but she could be quiet when she was often in her own world. She was, in Sophie's eyes, one of the girls who would throw themselves at Draco. When Sophie told her that she had become a prefect Emory asked her to talk to Draco for her as he was also a prefect. However, when they got off the train, Emory turned to Sophie, jaw dropped, and told her she was now over Draco because Theodore Nott got hot.

She did have to part ways with Emory to meet up with some of the heads of houses for prefect duty. When she got there, it was explained that each 5th year would be paired with a 6th year prefect for two weeks. This was so they could get the hang of things before being able to patrol on their own.

"Can't a seventh year take my spot?" Draco asked Professor Snape Angrily.

"No, don't ask me any more stupid questions Draco."

"It's okay Drakey, we can patrol together after the two weeks are over," Pansy chimed in and Draco rolled his eyes.

Sophie always wondered if Draco actually liked Pansy. He always seemed to be annoyed at her presence and they weren't technically together, but nonetheless she was always by his side.

"Listen up, I'll be giving you your pairing now," Snape started. "For Gryffindor house, Weasley and Creevy, Granger and Weasley. For Slytherin house Malfoy and Selwyn."

"What?!" Pansy screeched.

"Shut it Parkinson, you're with Travers."

Sophie stopped listening after that. Of course she was paired with the one person who didn't want to be there and of course he had to have a psycho girl trailing after him. She knew that Pansy was the only other option, and while she didn't like her, after this reaction she figured she probably would have been better off paired with her.

She of course went to the sorting ceremony and told Emory all about what happened at the meeting.

"Sooo, you're telling me you have a chance with Draco. Pansy obviously sees you as a threat and after my 'awakening of Theo' he's all yours," Emory swooned.

"I don't like him like that. I've never talked to him and besides he's got girls all over him."

"Oh come on Soph, I see the way you look at him," she started. "And look, he's looking over here right now." She was getting excited.

"He's giving me a death glare because he doesn't want to have to do patrolling with me," Sophie commented plainly.

That night Sophie went to bed uneasy. Patrolling started tomorrow after classes and she really didn't want to have to deal with that. She kept telling herself that it wouldn't be as bad as it seemed, but she wasn't convincing herself.

After classes the next day she was less than excited to meet up with Draco. There hadn't been a set place to meet, so she figured she would catch him in the common room. She did, but he was short and blunt and murmured something along the lines of "let's go."

He was short and vague with most of the instructions that he gave her and at the end of the first day told her that if she needed anything he would be available, but only to talk to him if he was around other people.

The silence went on until that Saturday, when Sophie finally decided to break the it.

"You're a prick, you know that?"

"I'm sorry, what did you say?" he asked, shocked.

"I said you're a prick. We spend hours together and you only say a couple words to me. You're supposed to be teaching me what to do, not just walking ahead of me while I try to catch up. My legs aren't as long as yours. We only have a little over a week left, so if you don't want to talk to me fine, but at least slow the fuck down," she rambled on.

"I didn't, I just," he started.

"I get you don't want to be here, but it's not my fault you are. If anyone other than me was made prefect you'd still be here. It doesn't give you the right to be an outright git."

"I'm sorry."

Sophie was definitely not expecting that. She had been rendered speechless, but as they continued walking he did slow down for her.

The next day they started to actually talk to each other. It was mostly about classes and things like that, but as time went on their conversations went past surface level, not much further past, but still.

He told her that he had seen her parents a couple times at his house and asked her if she ever had considered becoming a death eater. She said she hadn't really thought about it, but she knew there would be a time when her father would make her choose. Then his question backfired because she asked him the same thing. Luckily for him their patrolling for that night had come to an end before he could answer.

The next morning when Sophie came down the stairs, she ran into Draco and asked him what time she should meet him that night. Of course Draco was with his friends which also meant that Pansy was there. She went absolutely crazy, yelling that she had no right to talk to Draco and that Draco should be ashamed for making her feel comfortable enough to talk to him.

Sophie, not wanting any trouble profusely apologized and said she would stop talking to Draco. As she walked away Draco gave her an apologetic look and held up seven fingers indicating the time they were to meet.
