The two had a fun time, even if Ayaka had almost blown up the kitchen at some point. Thoma taught her a new dish every day, she didn't succeed every time but they both enjoyed spending time together. When Ayaka told him that she didn't have any friends he comforted her by saying he didn't have any in Inazuma either and that he would gladly be her friend.
Later that week while Thoma was making Ayaka lunch because she clearly couldn't herself, he felt a shiver run down his spine as a familiar voice came from behind him. His heart sank, and his stomach dropped.
-I don't recall permitting you to use the kitchen, his tone was sinister and made Thoma's skin crawl.
-I...
-Ayato! You're back! said Ayaka, who had suddenly appeared out of thin air. Thoma felt his muscles relax as he gave a sigh of relief. He thanked the Gods for yet again having spared his life.
-Ayaka, how are you? It's been a while.
-It's been a week! And you said you'd write to me, she seemed upset but quickly changed the topic, but I'm just glad you're safe.
- Of course, I am. There's the shuumatsuban to keep an eye on me if... sorry I'm getting off-topic here, he looked at Thoma who gulped.
-Oh, by the way, this is Thoma. I don't know if you've met him before, but he's nice and he's been teaching me how to cook. I know you don't trust people easily, but I promise he won't do anything bad, so please go easy on him, she pleaded. He only spoke after a few moments of silence in which he glared at Thoma.
-All right but let one of the other servants cook for you, I don't want to take any risks, he agreed reluctantly.
-I'll agree to your terms if you promise to be nice to him, I know how you can be with new people.
Thoma was impressed at the effect Ayaka had on Ayato, he seemed a lot gentler around her as if he wanted to protect Ayaka from the cruelty of this world. It made Thoma admire him a little.
The blond thanked Ayaka as soon as Ayato left.
-Is there any way I can be of use to the both of you? he asked. Even if Ayato had threatened him, he still felt grateful to him for having spared his life.
-Well, I think you could be an amazing housekeeper, but I doubt my brother would let you cook for either of us. I bet he has spies keeping an eye on you right now.
-Seriously?! Thoma was shocked at how suspicious Ayato was of him.
-Yes, he does it every time. I mean Inazuma isn't exactly the safest place. And people have tried to assassinate him before, she said in a surprisingly monotonous tone.
-Seriously? Is he okay? Why would anyone do that?
-Probably because he's the head of the Yashiro commission and the Kamisato clan. Some people think he has too much power others want him out of their way so they can conduct some evil plan, her expression was dark, which scared Thoma a little, but don't tell Ayato I know all this, he still thinks I'm an innocent little girl who shouldn't know about all the bad things happening in Inazuma.
-I see...
-Anyways let's go to the market I want to try that golden crab dish you taught me last week, Ayaka said cheerfully as if she had forgotten what she had said earlier.
