23- Smile, Raid on Stohess District Part One

--- back before the attack on Shiganshina, Annie Leonhart's hometown ---

"Looking good, Annie!" Annie's Father shouts as Annie kicks the white plush posts that stand in the middle of the back garden of her family home, "that's my girl!" her Father says as she stops for a moment, "what are you doing, Annie? No breaks!".

--- several days after the expedition, present time, in Stohess District ---

Annie wakes up as she sits up in her bunkbeds within the dorms. She gets out of bed and she pulls her hair back into a ponytail, getting changed into her uniform as she gathers with her fellow Military Police comrades.

"You finally woke up" one of the female members of the Military Police says as she looks at Annie as she comes down the stairs, "you look so scary when you sleep, I couldn't wake you. Sorry, Annie".

"Lately, you've been too lax" one of the male members stood next to the girl says as he looks forward.

"What? Are you mad?" the girl asks as she studies Annie's expression.

"Well, aren't you a friendly?" the man says as he doesn't spare her a look.

"Leave her alone" the silver haired man says from next to the other man, "Annie's from Trost District. And she's the only one in this HQ who's been in a fight. She just came back from hell. It'll take her a while to recover".

"I get it, you like her" the girl says as she looks over at the silver haired man, "what's so great about her".

"Hitch. There's only one way a moron like you makes it into the Military Police" the silver haired man says.

"What's that? I wouldn't know. Tell me" Hitch teases the silver haired boy.

"Stop it, you two!" the black haired man says sternly.

All of them stand up straight and salute as one of the captain's walk in.

"Don't bother" the Captain says as he stands in front of Annie and Hitch, "today, we have a different task for you than normal busywork. That's why I had all of you come here. It's about the Survey Corps group that's being summoned to the capital. They'll be passing through the city's main street today. Escorting them is a Military Police HQ job, so we just need to handle them as they come through town. Temporary permission for in-city use of Manouver gear has been granted. You will guard them in tandem with their own security. You'll travel by barge to the area where your mission will begin. That's all".

"May I ask something?" the black haired man asks as he stands straight.

"Hmm? What?" the Captain asks, not sparing him a glance.

"What are we protecting them from?" the black haired man asks as he looks at the Captain, "I've never heard of anyone within the walls acting against the Monarchy. There are minor criminals. But it's hard to imagine any real organisation unless they were based outside of the walls. And I can't imagine any possible motive".

"You're so serious" the Captain says as he walks towards the black haired man, "okay, you're in charge of everything. Here are the details" the Captain says as he forces the papers into the man's hands, "we Captain's are busy. You guys, handle this on your own. But don't screw up" the Captain says as he walks into the next room, "sorry, I held up your game".

"Damn, he's just screwing around" the black haired man says as they all walk outside into the courtyard.

"Yeah. This organisation is even more rotten than I imagined" Hitch says as she puts her hands in her pockets, "but of course, that's why I chose it. But when you're a rookie, they make you do almost everything. I didn't know that before".
