Chapter 2.

Cancer floor. It's the hardest floor for me to be on. It hurts seeing kids on this floor, they shouldn't be in a hospital, they should be outside. They definitely shouldn't be on this floor. I had to patients on this floor. A nine year old boy by the name of Colin and a six year old girl named Cynthia. Colin had been in and out of the hospital for three years now and to be honest he was the hardest one for me. He was a great kid and it hurt me to see him in so much pain when all he wanted was to be outside playing football like all the other kids. I walked into his little room that had been covered with football posters and balloons to see a little boy tossing a ball to a man in a white coat. A doctor about my age for sure. I closed the door silently and stood there. Colin looked over and yelled "Elise catch!" I instantly dropped my stuff and caught the football. Colin laughed at me and I smiled tossing it back at him. He had a perfect laugh.

"Oh good! Elise is here, now we can discuss the chemo therapy. He wanted you here with him." The doctor told me. I smiled and went to squish in with Colin in the hospital bed. I had done this every time we had found out any news on his cancer. Colin scooted over and let me in like always. I got a weird look from the doctor but he continued. "Okay, Colin you are going to have to go through Chemo and Radiation therapy. You will lose your hair but I bet that's the least of your worries right bud. It might hurt a little but we'll be there with you." Colin grabbed my hand and squeezed. I knew why, pain he could do, losing his hair he couldn't.

"Hey bud it's gonna be okay, you're going to look like those guys on your posters, strong and powerful!" He laughed a little. And I could tell he felt better.

"I'm going to go check on some other people but I'll be back later." The doctor informed us. I got out of the bed and followed him to the door..

"Hey, thanks for keeping him company Dr..."

"Lukes, Michael Lukes. "

"Well thank you Dr. Michael Lukes." I said with a smile. "I know that this is going to come out kind of strange but do you give um, er massages?"

He laughed and then looked at me, "Yes I do. Would you like one sometime?"

"Yes please. Sometime very soon." I nearly was begging.

"Absolutely! How about tonight at my place I can just take you there after work. I get off at 9."

"That sounds amazing. Thank you so much. I get off at 9 too. Where do I meet you?"

He paused and then said "Right here. I'm guessing Colin is the last patient of the night?" I looked down to my wrist at my watch and nodded. It was 8:50, I'd been here since 6 this morning and my day was almost over, it had seemed to rush through. "Okay see you in about ten minutes then."

I walked back into Colin's room to talk to him about random things, and just to be there for him. Ten minutes, that's all I needed to make this kid feel like everything was going to work out. Ten minutes was all I needed and that's exactly what I had.

"Night bud" I said to Colin as he drifted off to sleep. I silently walked out of the room and closed the door. "You're late." I jumped about three feet in the air. Dr. Lukes laughed at me and smiled.

"Don't do that! You scared the bejeebers out of me!" He just laughed more. I playfully hit him and walked towards the stairs.

"Wait, you WANT to take the stairs?"

"Yes. I still have to check out." He chuckled a little and followed me down the stairs. About five minutes later we were all set and leaving for his place... On the other side of town... Miles away from my house. Yeah I didn't really think that one through.
