Chapter 22

Fridays alarms blared throughout the mansion, the house shook uncontrollably as an explosion sounded somewhere downstairs. Alex grasped the couch as the flooring continued to rumble, she looked at Bucky and exclaimed.

"What the hell?!"

He grabbed her hand and ran out of the room. Downstairs, they were met with chaos everywhere, rubble and fire blazing with structural damages and glass shattered. The smoke blew around from the wind whipping about, Alex could feel the heat kiss her face.

"Tony!" she scanned the wreckage for her brother while Bucky called out for Sam, he shouted back in reply. "I'm okay!" then lifted himself up off the floor and gained balance on uneven ground. 

"Check for Tony, i'll scout the area," he added, not giving Bucky time to protest before running off to get his jet pack. He launched into the air and flew through the massive hole in the ceiling.

"Tony, where are you!" Alex shouted, shielding her eyes from the fire and narrowed her gaze in the direction his voice came when he called out.

He was gripping onto a steel beam that was dangling over the cliffs edge. Managing to hoist himself up, Tony leaned back against it just as Alex ran towards him with Bucky behind her. They pulled him up and to a safer even ground.

"What the hell is going on?" Alex asked with panic in her tone, and Bucky glanced around at the wreckage. His eyes tried to scan out the windows but there was too much going on.

"Friday, give me details on the attack," Tony commanded while Alex tossed him his ear com and put her own in as she handed Bucky his.

"Sir, there are three helicopters within the vicinity, a missile was launched,"

"Is it Hydra?" he asked.

In the next breath, everything happened so fast that none of them saw it coming. It seemed as if time itself had slowed down around her, she could hear the beating of her own heart and the fire crackling where it remained burning in small embers. Alex was standing beside Bucky in front of the floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the ocean, and Tony paced near them.

She whipped her head from the window to her brother and saw his mouth part as he screamed words at her with a horror filled expression, but she couldn't hear him. Her gaze dragged to Bucky and even his eyes widened in alarm. A bright light illuminated the darkness of night behind her, the sound of propellers drowned out everything around them. She saw Bucky's mouth sound out her name as he stepped forwards to reach for her but it was a second too late.

A missile hit right through the window, sending the glass smashing inwards and the entire floor level caving apart. The blast sent all three airborne, flying backwards in slow motion. Tony tapped his chest piece making the iron suit form over his body in a matter of seconds—thank god for nanotech because it protected him from the impact. They crashed against a solid wall and dropped to the ground in a heap, breath leaving their lungs momentarily.

Glancing up at the ceiling Tony noticed the cracks continuing to form, he braced himself with arms up just as the level above gave way and a large piece fell on top of him.

Bucky groaned and shook his head while pushing up to get on his knees. "Alex!" He shouted, eyes desperately raking over everything trying to find her. Alex groaned, slamming her palms against the ground as she pushed herself up. Her ears were buzzing and she felt dizzy.

"We can't stay here, let's go!" Tony said, shoving the piece of gravel off him and getting to his feet. Just as the words left his mouth, another missile hit lower into the cliffs edge making the mansion split in two. The floor between him and Alex tore apart, and she looked at him in pure panic. Tony drew his attention to Bucky and shouted his order.
