009. | HELLO THERE, STRANGER
— AFTER HOURS, LANDO NORRIS

It was Thursday, the day before the start of the race weekend, which meant media obligations were on the agenda. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the media. They had a way of diving into the deep end into every aspect of your personal life, leaving no stone unturned, and they showed no mercy even when you tried to retreat.

But today, surprisingly, wasn't so bad.

Daniel and I were working on another YouTube video for McLaren. This time, we had to watch some Netflix and provide commentary on it. More specifically, we were reacting to season four of Drive to Survive, the Formula 1 documentary series we were starring in.

Emery and I didn't arrive at the track together. She preferred to avoid the crowds for as long as possible, so she went with Isa and Heidi, who were planning to arrive later anyway. Tomorrow, on the first day of the weekend, she would accompany me, but we planned to arrive early to minimize the press, fans, and overall pressure on her.

At the moment, I was seated across from Will Buxton, who was conducting an interview with me. He asked me the usual questions about how the car was feeling and whether McLaren had a chance against the top teams, considering how impressive our car had been during testing. You know, the typical stuff.

For the past five minutes, I had been feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket. Technically, we weren't supposed to have our phones on during media engagements, but I always kept mine with me in case of emergencies or simply to combat boredom. I easily get bored, you know?

However, I had set my phone to "do not disturb" mode, allowing only calls and messages from important contacts like Emery and my team to come through. Since I knew there was nothing urgent happening with the team, as they would have sent someone to inform me, I could only assume it was Emery trying to reach me.

While Will was pondering over one of my previous answers, I took the opportunity to discreetly check the notifications on my phone. I noticed a missed call and four text messages from Emery. Unlocking my phone, I intended to reply before I was interrupted by Will Buxton himself, the journalist conducting the interview.
