(Ace's POV)
"Maggie, I swear, stop messing around, we have work to finish." I look up from my paper over at Maggie, a dirty blond-haired girl with big eyes and a dark red shirt, my best friend. She was giving me a silly look that made me snicker a bit. "What's with the look?"
"Trying to get you to loosen up, this ain't due until Thursday, we got time!" She slumps back in her chair, giving out an exaggerated sigh. I give her look.
"It's easier to just get it done now." I roll my eyes, looking back at my paper. "I hate having more work than I need."
"yeah, yeah whatever work-a-holic." She sticks her tongue out at me. "When does this period end anyway?"
"In- 20 minutes," I say looking up at the clock. "Come on, all you have to do is write a few summaries about the story."
"Ughhhh, but it's so- boring."
"Yeah, I know but it isn't hard." We may be arguing now but we really are close. Since I was little and adopted by the headmaster, I've been pretty lonely, being homeschooled and all. But when I finally got old enough to go to college here, I met Maggie. Maggie is an orphan, she was placed into foster care at the age of 6 and was in and out of houses until she was old enough to do what she wants. So we kind of clicked, she lost her parents and so did I, she was lonely and so was I, she hated heroes and so did I.
Why do we hate them you ask? Well, one, I was raised by a villain so- I kind of had to. And two, heroes are supposed to help people, save them right? But no one came to save Maggie's parents from the fire that night she lost them when she called out for someone, anyone to help. And no one ever came to save me from the clutches of Mr. Coldstone, the headmaster when he-... You know what? It doesn't matter... Just know that heroes turned their backs on us so we turned our backs on them.
That's how Maggie and I both came to this academy, we met on the first day when I met her by my locker, her locker was right next to mine, and it's still next to mine to this day. At first, she seemed pretty psycho to me, but over time with me talking to her and hanging out at lunch, I found that she was really nice and friendly, and she was the only one who accepted me as me. "Aceeeee, just let it be, don't you want to just spend this time by taking a breath? Just relaaaaxxx." She slid down in her chair, looking like a sloth as she went down. I just watched it completely unfazed.
"Whatever, you can finish your part later," I go back to work. "But I'm finishing mine now." I started writing the next summary. Maggie grabbed my hand, I look over at her again.
"Ace, come on, don't you want to mess with Brandon a bit? He's open~" I looked over at Brandon who sat in the front row. Bradon's a jerky smartass who had blue flames as a power, a lot of people who go here have powers, there are some humans like me and Maggie who don't but not as many. Brandon may have powers but he's not allowed to use them unless told to or else he'll be expelled. So he's pretty much powerless, so when we get a chance, Maggie and I put him in his place.
"True... It's the perfect shot from here too..." I start to think. "But I don't have-" I stop as I look at what Maggie is holding. It's all the materials I need to make a slingshot.
"I always come prepared." She smiled evilly. I smiled back as I grabbed the stuff out of her hands and started making it. I could hear Maggie squeal in excitement as she watched. I may be a 'work-a-holic', but I do love messing with Brandon. Once I added the rubber band, I was finished, it wasn't that hard really. I pulled the band back a bit, testing it out, I could feel Maggie eyeing it. I grab a handful of pebbles from Maggie's hand and put them in my pocket. Then I pull one out and place it on the slingshot. I pull back and aim for Brandon's head, I hear Maggie move closer to me. "Focussss, focussss." Maggie does this every time we do this, breathing down my neck even though she knows I'll hit him.
"Hard to focus when you're bothering me," I say, I aim directed for the middle of his head, Maggie looks around making sure no one is looking. Then when Maggie gave me the all-clear, I let go.
'THWAP!' Head-on collision.
I quickly hid the slingshot and then picked up my pencil. Maggie just looked around the room, trying to act nonchalant, she was not good at it. Brandon looked behind him, trying to see where the pebble came from. When he spotted us, he already knew. he looked back forward, raising his hand. The teacher looked up from his work and spotted him. "Yes, Mr. Blaze?" Yes, his name is Brandon Blaze, I'm pretty sure he changed it when he got into this place but I don't really bother finding out if that's true or not.
"Mr. Horrid, someone hit me in the back of the head with a pebble." You could see him side glare at us, Maggie and I were trying to not laugh.
"Well Mr. Blaze, are you bleeding?"
"Well no, but-"
"Then it's not my problem." The teacher went back to work. Kids were whispering and snickering under their breaths at this. Brandon was embarrassed, he looked back at me and Maggie, Maggie was holding her hand over her mouth, stifling her laugh. I just looked at him, giving him a small smirk. We kept eye contact for up to a minute before he looked back forward and got back to work. I snicker a bit, I won, again. Suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder, I looked over at Maggie who was almost dying from laughter. Her laugh was one of those laughs that are contagious you know? So I started chuckling a bit louder, but no one paid any attention to us, well except Brandon. We were both stifling our laughter until the bell suddenly rang, everyone got up and headed for the door. I grabbed my bag and work and stood up. I looked over at Maggie who just stuffed her stuff in her worn-out bag. She looked at me and gave me a cheeky smile.
"I knew you couldn't resist it." She laughed, I rolled my eyes but gave a small smile while doing it.
"Whatever, let's head to next period." I head for the door, Maggie follows.
"You got Science next right?" She says as I open the door.
"Yeah, gym for you?"
"Yeah." She chuckles, and we both get into the hallway, that's when I remember that the Math room and Gymnasium are on different sides of the school. I look to Maggie who got the same thought as me.
"Well, see you in- Villain History?" She gave me a half-hearted smile.
"Yeah... See ya!" She waved goodbye and we went our separate ways. Maggie gets extra upset when we are separated because neither of us has any other friends in any other classes, so she has to be in a room filled with people she doesn't know, alone. Maggie has ADHD, which has never been a problem with me but others treat her differently for it, keeping a distance and acting weird around her, so it's hard for her to make other friends. I choose not to have other friends because most of the people in this place are assholes. I wish sometimes people could see the Maggie I know and not what they think they see but- that's not how it works, she usually makes it work though, she just keeps going knowing once it's over, she'll get to be with me again. She and I are more like sisters than friends, we may fight but we love each other. We protect each other from hurt and help each other succeed. We also as sisters make promises, we made a promise our first year here that we are gonna get out of here and become villains together, and we've kept that promise, and no matter what, we will fulfill it, together.
