When they were born, they were divided into two groups. Some were born human, and were to be raised as Tamers. Others were born mutant, and were to be raised as Wilds. Before, Wilds were like slaves to their masters, the Tamers. But now they are equal. They relied upon each other with their lives, trusting one another, helping one another, and never leaving each others side, even through thick and thin.
They stay separated for 3 to 5 years, and then they meet and are paired for as long as they wish. Some stay together, some separate, others do nothing for eternity. These are what you call "Soul Mates".
