They made their way home quietly. It was something he so enjoyed about being with her- silence was so comforting and she didn't mind when he didn't have any more he wanted to add to a conversation.  Speaking to her was safe. Not speaking to her was safe, too, but it was nice to not have to keep up any facade of not caring about anything. If he had an opinion, he could share it, and she'd listen.  He found her silly- she seemed to have an unprecedented gift to see the good in everything and almost everyone, and always could find a way to see a less demented reason for why people would do what they would do.  There were certain vices and depravities that were too evil, even for her, though she liked to keep those thoughts to herself.

She spoke quietly, tenderly about how one day, she'd like to leave the clinic.  Maybe, she could find someone that she would trust to look after it.  How she deigned to just have rest, maybe finally finding a bit of peace beyond the confines of the city and away from the chaos.  Her fingers laced together with his, pressing their palms together as she run her thumb so gently over the scars on his hands.  He couldn't rightly imagine living a life like that- it all felt entirely too far out of reach, but it was nice to talk about with her, even if his tone of voice was sarcastic and snarky the entirety of the discussion.  "Would you live on a beach somewhere?"  His voice was almost patronising, but she raised her brows in challenge.  "Yep.  And I'd be parading about naked all the time.  Are you sure you won't come with me?"  That wild look in her eye made his heart stutter in the cage of his chest.

If he thought he'd live that long, he would've said yes. Sand and staples sounded like a bit of a nightmare, but she'd take care of him.  That was something he could trust.

I'll be dead before then. "Pass."  He huffed as his hand untangled from hers, and she dropped the topic with a haphazard 'okay then' that he must've ignored, if he didn't hear it.  She would be lying if she said that his dismissiveness didn't make her ache somewhat, but she perished the thought as quickly as she could, focusing instead on unlocking the door to the clinic and the feeling of her quadricep muscles each time she lifted herself up one more step.  She let the breath out of her lungs slowly to soothe the burn there as much as she could.

When they sauntered through the door, he was quick to help her out of her coat, despite how snappy he had been with her in those final steps.  Though he didn't understand it, the thought of someone wanting him and to be with him and finding comfort in him still incredibly foreign, he knew that she just wanted to share space and time with him.  Even if this all would be nothing but a charade, a cruel game between the two of them where they both dangled the dreams of better days in front of each other's faces, he felt bad for being so sharp with her.  Somewhat dry lips pressed kisses to the side of her neck as he slid the coat from her shoulders, the same kind of kisses that he would give her bare skin on a faraway beach if they had no worries or scores to settle.

A hiccup floated up in her throat. "Do you want to watch some TV or something... or should we have a shower and get in bed?"  The second part was quieter, almost like she wasn't ready to do that before he got back into her good graces.  He could think of a few ways to do so more physically, which he only became more inclined to do as he watched her walk past him, towards the living room.  Her back arched almost obscenely as she reached her long, slender arms up above her head, stretching out her spine with one hip cocked to the side.

He licked his lips, watching her with the same intensity that a tiger might watch a deer.  "I could do some TV."  Years of suffering had made physicality easiest.  It felt so natural with her, anyway.  At first, it had been physicality for the sake of not having to do anything but feel physical sensation, but with her, he could let himself feel the settling in his heart, the trust in her eyes and the softness of her most guarded places, left entirely unprotected for him.  "Okay," She half yawned.
