People always told me to never go near the train tracks when I was younger. At first, I didn't understand. That was, until this fateful day.
My friends and I were on our way to a carnival down the street. We decided to take a shortcut, down the edge of a train tracks.
As we walked, we laughed and joked with eachother. A few raced ahead, until we heard a scream from behind us.
I turned to see one of my friends standing on the track, frantically tugging at their leg.
Someone approached them, trying to get their shoelace untangled from the track. To no avail.
A train was coming. We needed to hurry. Some of our friends ran, others tried to help. Even passers-by were now trying to tug my friend off the tracks. The train got closer.
We didn't know what to do. It was life or death. We frantically tried to remove their shoe.
The train chugged onwards, closer and closer.
We heard it honk, telling us to move.
The shoe came off.
I tugged my friend out of the way, as we watched some of the others get hit.
My best friend and a stranger. Hit by the train.
Too stunned to move or speak, we sat there. A few inches from the track. Blood smeared on our clothes.
Eventually, one of the other strangers broke the piercing silence. She began sobbing. I tried to get up and help her but I couldn't move with fear.
She ran off. In the direction of the police station.
I realised we had to leave. What if they blamed us?
I scooped up my friend, who was slumped on the floor, and we hobbled. We didn't know where we were going but god we were moving fast. The world was a blur. My vision hazy.
Eventually, we ended up at the carnival.
Frantically, I searched for the others.
We left the house that morning with 6 people. Now down to 5. I wasn't going to let it get any lower.
I scooped my friend up once again, I had to find the others.
We walked around the area, scoping out anyone we could find, to no avail.
I dropped to the floor. As I did so, a man approached.
My friend ran, partially limping. I always assumed they were trying to get help.
The man grabbed me.
Darkness.I awoke in a strange room. Dark, damp and decrepit. My eyesight was still fairly blurry, but I saw faint outlines of a bed, which I had been resting on, and a wooden table in the far left corner, which appeared to be rotting.
As my eyes focused more, without my glasses might I add, I noticed rust and mould on the, what appeared to be, metal walls.
Where was I?A loud bang.
I turned my head frantically to see one of the walls opening up. It was a door. Food was placed on the floor and, as I tried to rush out of the room, I heard a deep voice.
"Oh. You're finally awake."
It was so muffled that I could barely make it out.
What was happening?
A shadow of a man appeared. My memory was hazy, vision blurred. The most I could say to describe him was that he had long, dyed, hair and a stocky build.
He kicked the food to me. "Eat."
I groaned, not taking his words in as I continued to examine the strange man.
"Eat!"
His voice was rougher this time, more bellow too. I obliged. Shovelling the gruel down my throat.
It didn't taste nice but, I'd rather eat it than face whatever consequence this man was going to place on me.The man turned to leave, something glinting in his hand. A set of keys.
As he left, I heard him lock the door- wall- thing.Had I been kidnapped? Was I going to die here?
My mind raced as I tried to continue eating the awful gruel I had been handed.
