I sighed as I pulled into the long driveway that led up to my family's cabin. I could remember so many summers there when dad would take us fishing and mom would beat my uncle at grilling anything you could've imagined.

I got out the car, letting Fritter roam around the front yard and porch as I unloaded the car, unlocked the door with my spare key and deactivated the alarm system.

After Donnie had hung up on me I had immediately called my parents and told them there were blockades popping up due to the snowfall happening that evening. They were more than happy to have me stay at the cabin if it meant that I was off the road and safe.

From what they knew.

Once my bags were inside and Fritter had relieved himself I shut and locked the door once I knew no one else was inside the house. My father's trusted shotgun pointing into every room before I walked in, Fritter right in front of me, sniffing out any possible intruders. When I knew there wasn't anyone in the house I worked on getting the house warm before I braved the snow again, throwing a tarp over my car and using some snow to weigh the ends down. I shook my hands after I had made sure the door was locked, my fingers slightly frozen.

With the heater going I set out to build a small fire in the living room. Just as that started going I shed my coat and scarf as the bitter cold that had sunken into the house begun to lift. Fritter walked around the house, sniffing around every nook and cranny before he had tired himself out and settled down in front of the fire place.

With Fritter settled, I went about getting rid of any dust. Mom had come down to the cabin about once a month whenever she could just to dust and to do any kind of maintenance on the house so that it was in relatively good condition.

After about two hours I didn't have anything to distract myself with I started to feel nervous about being alone for so long. I texted Donnie, checking in to see how far out he was. I still couldn't find the tracker on my car and I didn't want to spend anymore time outside than I needed to as the snow started to pile up and the sun had gone down a while ago.

When he didn't reply immediately I begun to pace the house, looking for something to clean or straighten out. When I found nothing else I could do I walked into my designated bedroom on the second floor.

The walls were decorated in blue and white forest themed wall paper. Deers and other woodland critters frolicked around trees and berry bushes. The furniture was a white oak, matching with the white light fixtures and decorations.

I removed the dust cover from the bed before removing the vacuum sealed bedding from the closet. With the bed dressed I laid down, resting my head on top of my pillow as I picked up Donnie's gift from my chest. Opening up the computer I scrolled through all the features he had installed, from the hologram to the secured chat rooms everything about the small computer was impressive.

Closing the clip that exposed the screen I stood up from the bed when I heard the sound of truck driving in the distance. I called Donnie, hopeful that it was him.

He didn't pick up.

My nerves were on edge as I reloaded the shot gun on the kitchen table. I kept it pointed upwards as I pressed my back against the wall next to the front window, peaking through the blinds from the side so I didn't have to part them. The headlights of an unfamiliar Range Rover flashed past my eyes as it drove past the house, heading towards a dead end.

There was no reason for that car to be there.

I tried not to hyperventilate, hoping Donnie wasn't too far out as I hadn't seen any other vehicle drive pass the house for the past few hours and that Range Rover definitely wasn't his car. I watched as the car reached the end of the road before it turned around and headed back to the main access road.
