An innocent cat accused of being a thief. A video proving his guilt, despite the accused insisting otherwise. Was he really telling the truth? Was I really right to trust him? Or had my own brother gone behind our backs and betrayed everything we thought we knew about him? No matter the answer to these questions, we had to investigate and find the truth. Even if it may end up hurting us...
But where to start?
Well, the first step of any good investigation is interviewing those Involved. Luckily we had two of those here already, but the question is, which to start with, the accused or the accuser?
Interviewing Mom would probably be safer, but we'd probably gather more helpful information from the accused. Problem is, we had been expressly forbidden from seeing him at the moment, so doing so would be very risky.
"Anais?" Darwin asked, snapping her out of her train of thought.
"Hmm?"
"You're kind of just... standing there. Are we actually going to do anything, or...?"
"Oh, sorry, I just trying to decide who we should interview first."
"Well, Gumball is probably pretty worked up right now. I think he'll probably want a little time to himself at the moment. Plus Mom said we aren't allowed to see him anyway, so..."
"Yeah, he was sobbing when he ran upstairs..." She looked down with a small whimper. "If only we had tried harder to convince Mom..."
Darwin placed his fin on her shoulder. "Hey, you know she never would have listened to us. She was too angry to think rationally. Maybe she'll listen now though?"
She sniffed and wiped her nose. "Yeah, it's worth a shot I suppose...alright, we'll start with her. Let's go." She grabbed a small brown bag from the corner which she slung over her shoulder, then grabbed her diary and pen in order to write notes, which she put inside the bag, before she headed toward the door.
He followed and the two walked downstairs, where they found Nicole sitting in the dining room silently, having now calmed down significantly.
"Hey, Mom?" Anais called.
"Hmm?" She looked up and saw Anais in her detective costume being followed by Darwin. "Oh hey, sweetheart. Playing detective are you?" She smiled weakly.
"We're not 'playing', we're investigating an actual case. The shoplifting one actually."
"Oh." She frowned, sounding annoyed. "Well, I'm sorry to tell you but there's nothing to investigate. The video shows Gumball stealing a video game, as well as a bunch of candy clear as day."
"Uh-huh.." She wrote in her diary, noting down what she said.
She looked up from the diary . " and it was definitely him? No chance of mistaken identity?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so. He was in plain view of the camera. In fact, he looked right at it! It was almost as if he wanted to get caught..."
"But it can't have been him! He'd never do something like that!" Anais argued.
"I thought so too but obviously I was mistaken. I really wish I didn't have to say this, but I'm afraid your brother is a thief."
"You're wrong! He's innocent, we know he is!" Darwin insisted.
"As much as I want to believe that, and trust me I really, really do, the footage is crystal clear, It was undeniably him, no doubts about it."
