Although pretty heated our interview with the suspect's mother did give us some new information, though it only confirmed what we already knew. A video showed Gumball shoplifting despite him claiming that he wasn't there. Was he telling the truth though? I was almost certain he was, but a small part of me kept asking the same question over and over.
What if he wasn't...? What if he was just playing me and Darwin like a fiddle, sending us on a wild goose chase? What if he really had betrayed everything I thought I knew about him? I was almost afraid to continue digging any further, for fear of what I might discover...but I had to, for his sake.
As they neared the bedroom they slowed down as they heard that Gumball was still crying.
The two looked at each other worried, unsure if they should continue or not.
"Do we go in?" Darwin whispered.
"I'm not sure. i mean, I don't want to disturb him, but...we kinda have to..."
Darwin looked down in thought. "I guess so...we should take it carefully and patiently with him though. He's probably still really shaken up."
She nodded. "Yeah, don't worry, I will."
Anais slowly raised her paw and placed it on the doorknob. She was just about to turn the knob and open the door when Darwin stopped her.
"Wait!" He hastily whispered as he placed a fin on her arm. She turned and looked at him confused. "What?"
"Maybe...maybe we should knock first, to...y'know, make sure he's okay with us coming in?"
She hesitated before nodding and moved up her paw, knocking on the door instead.
"Gumball...?" She asked quietly, sounding genuinely worried. "It's me and Darwin, can we come in?"
They received no response, instead hearing fabric shuffling as if Gumball was adjusting himself.
"Buddy?" Darwin called out, sounding equally as worried. "A-A-Are you okay?"
After another couple of seconds of silence, they heard a sniff. "...No." A broken voice replied in a defeated-sounding tone.
"Oh, Gumball.." Darwin replied feeling genuinely bad for him.
Anais sighed. "I know you're still pretty shaken up, but is it okay if we come in? We just wanna talk with you."
He remained quiet again, and they heard him let out a few more sniffles and sobs as he thought to himself. Finally, he responded again, the fear evident in his voice.
"D-Did...did Mom send you...to...to t-try and get me to confess to it or something? B-Because I didn't do it! I s-swear, I didn't, you have to believe me!" He pleaded.
"It's okay, we believe you. We know you didn't do it. And don't worry, Mom didn't send us. In fact, if anything we're going against her by being here." Anais assured him.
"...Y-you are? How?"
"Can we please come in first? It's kind of annoying yelling at a disembodied voice through a door..." She joked, earning a chuckle from him. "Yeah, course you can. I could really use the company..."
"Thanks, bud." Darwin smiled, and the two slowly opened the door and entered.
They walked around the bed and found Gumball sitting on his bunk, back against the wall, knees tucked up against his chest. He was tightly hugging his pillow., which was visibly soaked from his tears. He himself was no better, with his eyes red and wet from crying, the fur around them equally as wet. His fur was a mess and he was visibly trembling as his ears were pinned flat against his head
