when volleyball club members saw yn standing in the doorway, they felt a strange sense of déjà vu. she didn't look as sad as she did the day before, and it was the end of their practice, but the bag she held in her hand looked very familiar.
"i'm sorry for interrupting your practice again, i tried to wait for the end, but i'm not sure if you ended or if you're just taking a break, and i have to go home soon, so... sorry if i'm interrupting, again, but i felt so bad about giving you cookies just because daishou didn't want them, so i thought i should do something special for you and i made muffins with fruits i had, so there are blueberry, raspberry, and peach ones. i hope you'll like them."
yn spit out her words like someone was chasing her, and no one dared to interrupt her short, sweet monologue. she was very good at catching people off guard with her nice and genuine gestures.
"you are the sweetest, yn, we just finished practice and i'm starving."
atsumu quickly took the bag from her and was the first to choose the largest and most beautiful muffin from the entire batch.
"tsumu, when did you start calling her by her given name?"
aran wondered aloud, his attention drawn to his friend.
"yn said it's only fair if i call her by her given name as well, since she already calls me by mine."
he responded proudly, smiling at the girl. aran looked at him suspiciously, but brushed it off after a second.
"that was all i wanted. i have to go now, i'll see you tomorrow!"
"ln-san, we've already finished, so if you wait a minute for us, you could walk home with us."
"oh, kita-san, are you sure it's not a problem?"
"don't be silly, of course it's not a problem, we'll be back in a minute."
osamu patted her shoulder before heading to the locker room with the rest of his friends.
yn felt like crying. it was stupid, but she was an emotional person, and knowing that someone wanted to spend time with her touched her deeply. she wanted to jump around to let some of her happiness out of her body while waiting, but she held back herself to avoid looking like an idiot when the boys returned.
when they returned, they split up with the rest of the team and headed back to the neighborhood where they all lived.
yn found herself walking by suna's side because they had already taken a walk together and she felt most comfortable doing so with him. not that she felt uncomfortable around the others, but the miya twins had a habit of punching each other and she didn't want to get one of the punches in the face, aran was the one who would keep them apart, so he wasn't a good choice either, and kita was walking really slowly, too slow for her liking, and she didn't want to be mean and get ahead of him after a minute of walking with him.
"so, you really like baking, i guess?"
suna was finishing his raspberry muffin that he had taken from the bag after changing clothes in the locker room, and if osamu didn't finish the rest of them, he would definitely ask for another one. it was a good topic to discuss in order to get to know each other better.
"yeah! i love baking. it's my 'go-to' thing when i don't know what to do or am stressed. what about you?"
"hm?"
"what is your 'go-to' thing when you don't know what to do or are stressed?"
after that brief moment, suna had to admit that yn company was easy to enjoy. he didn't know her well, but it was clear how genuine she was, and her enthusiasm made it an enjoyable to be around her.
"well... i don't think i have one, i don't get stressed easily."
"oh, don't be so cool! everyone struggles with stress from time to time. you're not nervous before a big game or anything?"
her walk became more bouncy as she talked more. it was such a small detail, but it was easy to notice when she was walking right next to him a few seconds ago and now she was a step or two ahead of him.
"have you seen us play before?"
suna wasn't trying to be arrogant, but he believed in his team like nothing else. he never questioned their abilities because he knew that if he started, he would never stop.
"actually no, whenever i mention volleyball, daishou gets kind of mad, so i just never even thought about going..."
"so, fuck daishou, and come see us this weekend! we have a practice game."
atsumu turned around and walked backwards, facing the two people who were following him. he didn't want to interrupt their conversation, but he couldn't stop himself from cursing out daishou because it was the perfect opportunity.
"exactly, and we're really good. it's worth seeing."
suna quickly backed up his friend. knowing that their practice match will be the first one that yn will see will give them even more motivation to win and show off their talents, even if it is only practice and not an official game.
"hm, if i don't have to watch my siblings, i can come!"
"you can always bring your siblings with you, i am great with kids!"
"well... atsumu is also a liar."
yn softly laughed at suna's words, causing atsumu to scoff and turn back, whining about how cruel suna is to aran.
"that was funny, but it didn't make me forget my question!"
"what question?"
"what do you do in your free time?"
suna couldn't help but smile when she heard yn's question. she not only returned to their previous conversation, but she also phrased her question differently after he told her he doesn't get stressed. that was a very smart move, but she didn't seem to have considered it. she was a natural talker, perfect for keeping the conversation going.
"i like... taking trips around japan, taking photos, i skate sometimes."
"oh! that's so cool! do you know how to do tricks and stuff? i'm not sure what they're called, but they always look badass... back in tokyo, i was living in tokyo before high school, my friend and i wanted to learn to skate, but we were both terrible at it, so nothing came of it... i'm sorry for talking so much."
yn couldn't help but laugh at the thought of her and bokuto trying to learn to skate on an old skateboard they found in a boy's attic. they were bored kids, so it was a great idea to try something new to kill boredom, but after a few scratches, they brought back the skateboard to the attic and swore they would never skate again. the fact that they couldn't even stand on the skateboard was humiliating for both of them.
"don't worry, i don't talk much, so we balance each other."
"it doesn't bother you? oh, i'm sorry if i'm forcing you to talk."
suna couldn't believe how many thoughts yn had to have in her head to think of every bad outcome in a matter of seconds. she was always mentally preparing herself for the worst.
"no, that wasn't what i meant. i meant that i don't talk as much as you do, but it's nice to know that you're curious about me."
he tried to gently explain so she wouldn't worry about it and keep talking, because listening to her was really nice.
"that's what friends do, right? because we're friends?"
"that's right, we are."
"so, do you know how to do tricks on skateboard?"
