Forced Beginnings

The office was alive with typing, printing, writing, and the unmistakable noises of a coffee machine. There wasn't much to go off of when it came to their research other than myths, legends, and "sightings". Magic was hard to locate, mysterious and unpredictable. If people knew the government was looking for monsters it would make their peaceful searches much more chaotic.

People and their crazy theories.

They were doing what any soldier would do. Hunt down and remove a possible threat. With magic, they had a plus. They could use it to their advantage.

Jace hummed happily at the thought. All the things he could do with that power, magic, at his fingertips. He could imagine himself with all that power. The male then proceeded to picture himself daydreaming. He wondered how other people saw the look in his hazel eyes and then laughed to himself as he had just daydreamed about daydreaming.

"Mr, Cornell, this time is for work. Not dreams." Jace groaned as his, obviously, jealous co-worker practically dragged him from his happy place. Metaphorically. He spun his office chair from side to side as he tiredly stared at his co-worker, Adam's, reflection on his computer screen. The man was jealous that he was busy working and Jace was happily daydreaming.

Typical.

Adam had green eyes and dark brown hair, making his bright eyes stand out even more. Jace's hair was just a dirty blonde. He was jealous of Adam's emerald green eyes, sometimes. Usually just when Adam does better than him at something which wasn't actually that often. It was shocking considering Adam seemed to work his ass off.

Jace counted the seconds down in his head.

Three.

Two

One.

"Alright, it's six o'clock, home time. Cya loser." Jace laughed, he loved doing that and seeing the annoyed face of his colleague. Adam always noticed him drifting off too late. The man had very little sense of time. With a folder hidden under his coat, Jace got up and headed across the room to the elevator door. He got in, hitting the button for the ground floor. He had been sneaking folders for months now. He wanted to find the magic for himself. Maybe then he could find his brother.

Adam's gaze was still on Jace's back. Glaring. Jace felt it even after the elevator doors shut.

---

The elevator made a whirring sound as it ascended. Jace watched as the numbers went down from six to G and stepped out of the elevator onto the ground floor. Jace always made sure to wave bye to the receptionist before heading outside to his car. Best to stay on good terms with everyone as he took home extremely illegal folders and folders of research.

He spotted the small spotless black car and got in. The red dice hanging off his review mirror were sometimes the only thing that reminded Jace which car was his. Jace started the car and began to maneuver his way out of the parking lot. The dice bounced almost like they were dancing as the car began to move. While he drove he thought about his brother. They were separated when he was five and Oliver was only one. He wouldn't remember him.

He drove through the neighbourhood.

His brother might not even accept him if and when Jace found him. They have been separated his whole life. Jace was twenty-one now.

Jace parked his car in the driveway and headed up to his house. He was about to unlock it but... "No, that can't be right." He mumbled to himself. He had gone to unlock the door, but instead of the key going in, it had pushed the door open an inch. It was slightly ajar, he pushed on the door as if not believing it, and it opened wider.
