Part 5-First Day

I had a big day, a few months back.
It was my first day "On Top."

I try to be a humble soul.
A Fall follows Pride.
And into destruction a Haughty spirit slides.
Of all this I know.
So, be humble.

I dressed casually.
Walked into the downtown main offices.
I was stopped by security.
I said I have an appointment to see Mr. Kessler.
And handed them my ID.

Be humble.

While they called to announce me,
I took a seat.
As quickly as I sat down came an apology:
"Sorry, Sir!"

Sometimes someone's talking on the phone but you don't need to hear the words on the other end of line to know what they're saying.
Sometimes, it's just that simple.

"So sorry to make you wait, Sir."
But "that's ok."
I'm Humble.

He offered to accompany me up.
I said no.
"I think I can find my way.
As you were, Sir. Go.''

And as I walked on, I could hear the security guards whisper.
These were whispers alluding to an atmospheric change.
"But yes, let them talk.
Let them amongst themselves discuss, discuss it all."

If you don't understand it.
You won't understand what was coming next.
So many smiles.
They knew me by name.
"Good morning, good morning."
If you didn't understand, you'd think, to them, I was the best thing that happened.

But it was all fake.
Their smiles and friendly greetings were all fake.
They don't really want me there.
It's another white house,
which has for centuries resisted the paint.

Double doors opened and I was ushered in.
A massive table of power suits and power ties.
Sitting there are men who run the world!
Men who always get what they want.
Until now.

No seat reserved for me.
"Stay humble," my mind said.
I walked around the table, called each by name and introduced myself.
Pulled a chair from the corner:
"Good to meet you, gentlemen."

They talked business for an hour or two.
Some were genuinely friendly, one or 2.
Tried to get to know me, which was good.
Then suddenly they asked my opinion.
I responded with "What do you think?"

Shortly after, I got up from my chair.
I'd heard all I needed to hear.
"Good day, gentlemen."
And left.
The noisy chatter falling to silence.

My first day.
That's how it went.
Awkward? Yes?
