(This chapter is called "If Anybody's Gonna Run This County Into the Ground, It's Gonna Be Me" but apparently that's too long for Wattpad to handle (that's what he said) So, anyways, enjoy this chapter and the weekend, I hope y'all are all having a great week and I'll see you again soon)
It was creeping toward midnight when a pair of headlights pulled into the driveway, casting warm beams through the rain. Unfamiliar, however, was instead of the shape of the casual stock car or outlandish Defects that incorporated the farm, this was simply an ordinary car. The coupe's brakes squeaked as it lurched to a halt in front of the farmhouse. The headlights faded out as the engine shut down, a rigid figure stepping out of the vehicle and into the rain.
She walked up to the porch, stepping in from the rain and kicking the door frame to jar the mud from her boots. She knocked on the house door, not bothering to wait for a response, and walked in, taking off her hat.
"She came!" she heard someone exclaim and quickly looked up to see four sets of eyes on her.
"Autumn, thank the Lord," Jesse said, coming up to her and greeting her with a hug.
Autumn pulled away from him after a moment. "I came as soon as I got Cooter's message. Now what kinda trouble have the boys gotten themselves into this time?"
Daisy crossed her arms. "I'm afraid it's worse than it looks."
"I figured somethin' like this would happen, that's why I called you," Cooter explained.
"Guess you were right to be cautious. Where are they?" Autumn asked.
Jesse nodded towards the living room. "In here."
Autumn raised an eyebrow and looked over towards the sheriff sitting at the table, Rosco noticing she was looking at him though not bothering to look up.
"And I suppose this never woulda happened if you woulda just done your job," she said.
Rosco didn't reply and kept his gaze averted, listening to four pairs of footsteps exit the room.
In the living room, the fireplace was lit, casting a warm glow onto the walls. Boss Hogg was sitting in a chair in the corner, an uneasy expression on his face. On the other side of the room, Bo was laying on the sofa, Luke kneeling next to him.
Autumn followed Jesse, Daisy, and Cooter in, folding her arms across her chest as she surveyed the room. "Alright," she asked, "what's the diagnoses?"
Boss Hogg opened his mouth to talk but was quickly cut off.
"Shut up, I wasn't askin' you."
"Don't know, Doc said he wasn't gonna be around 'til sometime tomorrow," Luke said.
Autumn turned to look at him and nodded toward Bo. "What happened?"
Luke shrugged and shook his head. "Poor kid passed out a little after we got here, haven't been able to wake him since."
She nodded. "And you?"
"Dizzy. Betcha if I tried to stand up now, I'd fall right over. I wanna say I got lucky, but then again, I didn't drink as much as he did."
"You have any idea what he put in there?"
"No, but whatever it was, it was small and black, like rubber, somethin' you'd pick outta artificial turf."
"A mushroom."
"Sounds about right."
Autumn thought for a moment, an idea lighting up her eyes.
"You know somethin'?" Jesse asked.
"No," she replied, looking over at him, "but I know someone who does." She started back towards the door, grabbing her hat. "I'll be back, but it might be a while."
