The Changing World

Change is and will always be a part of life, but seeing the entire world change happens with age. The older you are the more you realize that the world of those born in the 1920's, 30's, and all the years since have progressively become drastically different. Not every change was bad, many were life changing and help millions of people but other changes made things worse not better.

Being born in the 80's we were raised incredibly different from our children. We played outside till dark, hung out at our friends houses all day sometimes. There was more trust, we had sleepovers, and AOL chat rooms eventually. Was there still danger and equal opportunity for crimes absolutely but less opportunities to read or watch them. You couldn't stream a documentary that scared you to death or here about everything going on in the world. Mostly we were happy in our ignorance.

Personally my world changed the most when I worked with a disaster organization prior to work with them never had anything happened beyond a hurricane or two to me personally. Never had I witnessed a fire although I did see a burnt house once in Elementary school because it was across the street and a student had passed away. But here I was fresh out of college starting a job not really knowing what I was getting into. In the 11 years I was with the organization I responded to thousands of home fires, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, mass casualty events, a school shooting and my view of the world changed.

For a few years I was in charge of all disasters that occurred in a county of 1.9 million people. This was a field that was my passion but I was burned out and overworked with little support. The school shooting was a turning point for me. Even though at the time I didn't know it, it changed my world, my whole perspective on life and my advancing age showed me that things were bad and not going to get better because hardly anyone believes it could happen to them and hardly anyone wants to prepare or mitigate situations that may never happen to them. That is until they do maybe not today or tomorrow or 10 years from now but someday they will. Are you ready? Because the world continues to change everyday and not for the better.
