Brooklyn Davis

I open my eyes to a dim-lit room. The lights must be off. But, where am I? I sit up abruptly and put my hand up to my head when the headache comes back in full force. "W-where am I?" I am sleepy and in a hell lot of pain. "You're in the nurse's office. Lay back down," says a soft woman's voice. I open my eyes to see the school nurse and Izzy sitting down on the bed next to me. "What happened?" I ask, pushing the nurse's hands off my shoulders. I look up at her and smile. "I'm fine," I say and she smiles back and sits down at her desk.
"Well, after you blacked out, Cody walked off and Eric and I got you to the nurse's office then he left," Izzy said looking at the floor. "How long was I out for?" I ask, closing my eyes and putting my head in my hands.
"Not long. Only about 40 minutes," Izzy said, laying down on the bed with her legs off to the side. "Do you remember what happened?" Izzy asked so quietly I could have imagined it. "Yes. I remember," I say thinking about what Eric had done for me. I still don't get it.
"Can I get some ice for my head?" I ask the nurse sitting up. "Yes of course. I will be right back," the nurse gets up and leaves the room at a hurried pace. "Why did he help me?" I ask turning towards Izzy. "How would I know? He never helps anyone. Why did he decide to step in when you already had it handled?" Izzy asked, looking back down at her hands in her lap thinking.
"That is what I'm trying to figure out. God, I wish he hadn't done anything. Now everyone is going to think that I need help," I say standing up and immediately regretting it. The room started to spin and I got lightheaded and just decided to sit back down. "This is way too out of step for him," Izzy said, still looking down. She looked nervous and uneasy. "Hey, what's up?" I ask turning around to face her.
"It's nothing. I'm just worried about you," she said, looking up at me with a small smile that didn't reach her eyes. I could not tell if she was lying or not. She was better at it than I was.
"You sure?" I ask as the nurse walks in and hands me a bag of ice. "Thank you," I say looking up at her and she smiles and sits back down at her desk.
"Can we go to class?" I ask and the nurse looks up at me contemplating letting us go. "How is your head?" She asked, still thinking. "It's fine," I lied. I did not want to be here longer than I had to. "Can you walk?" I stood up and ignored the pulsing and spinning of the room. "Yes, I can walk," I said blinking a few times to clear my vision. "Okay, then I will write you two a pass to head back to class. If your headache gets worse or doesn't go away after an hour, come back here and I can give you a new thing of ice to help with the pain" said the nurse leaning over her desk writing on two small slips of paper and handing one to each of us.
We walked back in silence. Not an awkward silence, but a calm one. Besides, the lights in the hall were making my head pound worse. Talking wouldn't be much better.
Once we walked through the door I went to sit down at my seat and Izzy went up to the teacher who had stopped teaching once we walked in. The classroom was smaller than the others and didn't have air conditioning, so during the hotter days, it was a sauna in there. Today wasn't that bad. The desks are in rows and columns all facing the front of the classroom. And our teacher, Ms.Crawford, had a presentation on the board about something for English notes.
"What did you tell her?" I asked Izzy once when she sat down in front of me in our row. "The truth," she said so matter of factly like I was dumb. "How much of the truth?" I asked, wanting to make sure she didn't know about that fight. "I'm not stupid Brook. I told her on the way to the first period you tripped over someone in the hall and hit your head on the wall and blacked out" she said Yeah well that teacher isn't stupid either.
