I know you told me I should stay away
I know you said he's just a dog astray
He is a bad boy with a tainted heart
And even I know this ain't smart
But Mama I'm in love with a criminal
And this type of love isn't rational
It's physical
Mama, please don't cry, I will be alright
All reasons aside, I just can't deny
Love the Guy- Criminal by Britney Spears

Eating dinner with her family was Michelle's worst fear; she hated it more than anything in the world. Sitting at a table with your siblings who hate her and her parents who secretly hate each other and are failing miserably to disguise the fact that their marriage is falling apart was not fun. At this point, the tension is so thick that only a butcher knife can cut through it. It's so awkward that you wish you could drop dead at the moment. The conversations at dinner were the main thing she hated; there was always that one question that Michelle despised.

"Michelle, where is your boyfriend?"

Michelle paused, her eyes slowly moving in the direction of her mother, the person who asked the question. Her mother was looking at her, waiting for her response he will never get. Every single day Michelle's mother had asked where her boyfriend was, hoping for the response she so desperately wanted. She wanted Michelle to tell her that she found a good holy boy and that she finally had a boyfriend.

Michelle knew what her mother wanted from her but unfortunately, she couldn't give her the response she wanted. She could lie to her mother, give her the response she wants and say that she has a boyfriend. She could look her mother right in the eye and say she is dating a respectful young man. She could say all the things her mother wants her to say, which would be nothing but lies.

"Umm sorry to disappoint you but I'm still single," Michelle said, lying straight through her teeth.

Michelle's mother sighed and continued eating. As usual, her mother looked disappointed because she didn't get the response she wanted. Michelle kind of felt bad, maybe she could have lied and spared her mother's feelings. Still, she knew that lying wouldn't end well for her; it was just best for her to lie for her sake and not her mother's. Anything was better than telling the truth; it was likely her mother would drop dead if she heard the truth.

"Why do you keep asking her the same question? She's going to say the same thing every time and you know that. She's still single and she will forever be single," Aaron said, causing the rest of her siblings to laugh.

Michelle rolled her eyes. "Shut up, I don't see you having a girlfriend. Matter of fact all of you are single as well so you guys have no right to say anything to me."

"Well, we are too young to be dating anyone, you're the only one who can date. Besides, there is no one at our school we can date. All of those people are bad, especially some of the girls."

"Yeah, there is this group of girls that I'm sure are in a gang. I think one of the girls' names is Giselle. She's the leader, she's the worst too," Cameron said, causing the table to voice their agreement.

Soon the whole table began talking about Giselle and her supposed gang. Everyone didn't hold back their opinions; they all felt comfortable voicing their displeasure for the girl. Michelle was the only one who stayed silent; she didn't feel comfortable talking badly about other people, especially if the person was her girlfriend.

Yes, Michelle wasn't as single as she claimed to be, she just said that to keep the peace. She knew her family would freak out if she told them she had a girlfriend. On top of that, not only was she dating a girl, she was dating a criminal. Telling them she was dating a girl who had committed every crime in the book would not only get her disowned, it just might get her killed.
