Taehyung sat on the edge of Jimin's hospital bed, watching Jimin's chest move as he slowly breathed in and out.
The younger boy hummed in order to soothe himself. He loved Jimin, he loved him wholeheartedly. The rhythm his voice made as he hummed to himself reminded him of better times, better times where Jimin's eyes were still as bright as summer, still open wide and full of emotion.
He missed those times, he couldn't help but endlessly wish for those times again. Even if it was when Jungkook was terrible, or where he was angry with himself for not doing anything to save himself. Taehyung missed when at least people he cared about were safe, and were happy.
The constant beeping of the heart monitor was the only thing keeping Taehyung there himself, he couldn't bare the thought of losing his friend.
"How's he doing, Taehyung?" Yoongi asked as he abruptly walked into the room, a fresh coffee in his hand as he stared at Jimin's motionless corpse with a hint of sorrowfulness in his sad eyes.
Taehyung didn't give him a glance, not even once. He just spoke with a sense of mournfulness overwhelming his own heart. "He's fine, I guess."
An uncomfortable feeling filled the around around the two as the silence made their ears ring. Nothing could have been said to change what had already happened, and nothing could make it go away.
Yoongi hummed in response as he twiddled with the coffee cup.
Yoongi's guilt was enough for him to cry for a thousand lifetimes, and even more if Jimin died. It overwhelmed him as he looked at a sorrow-filled Taehyung, and the motionless corpse of someone he was supposed to keep safe within his arms.
"Taehyung, I... I just don't know what to do... I don't know how to fix this. I'm so scared, I feel so bad for what I've caused," Yoongi went on as Taehyung looked up from his own lap as he looked intently at the older boy. "but I don't know what I'll do or what I can do if I can't make it up to him. I don't think I even deserve to."
"Yoongi....just you-"
Taehyung's sentence was interrupted by a certain breath. A breath that would remind one of the way dead tree branches scratched against each other in the cold winter afternoons as they reached for the sun with hope of being brought back to life. Or the way the wind would blow through the leaves on a cold autumn morning, making the leaves rustle and cry out.
It was the death rattle.
Taehyung wasn't sure how he hadn't heard it before, yet Jimin was probably breathing like that for hours on end whilst Taehyung slept and ate.
Even though, Taehyung's worries would come to an end as the heart monitor stopped beating, but instead made an ear-deafening ring.
Jimin was gone.
