Chapter 8: First mission

A few weeks have passed since I passed the final selection. My Nichirin sword came in a few days ago. Rengoku and I showed our Nichirin swords. While Rengoku had a bright red sword mines was a soft light blue one.

Rengoku: It's so bright with color!

Yuki: It really is, mines is so soft

Rengoku: It's still a beautiful color! It suits your personality!

I looked at him curiously and he explained how gentle and calm I am.

Yuki: You think so?

Rengoku: Indeed Ikeda-San, you are very relaxed.

He was smiling brightly at me and I couldn't help but smile back at him. His smile is very contagious.

Nao: Ikeda-Sama, Rengoku-Sama, you must report west from here! In a village of silence! Hurry hurry! Many are going missing!

Father: Looks like you two are needed.

I looked at my father who gave me and Rengoku an encouraging smile. I nodded and ran out the door with Rengoku.

Mother: Wait! Take some food for the road!

My mother ran after us, I looked at the small basket she gave me and it was filled with food.

Rengoku: Thank you!

Yuki: Thank you, mother

I smiled at her and she simply nodded. Rengoku and I ran off again. After a while, we slowed down due to us getting hungry.

Yuki: Nao said it's a day walk

Rengoku: We may make it earlier if we keep running.

I nodded in agreement, I then looked at the basket my mother gave me and grabbed then open a bamboo husk.

Yuki: Ohhh rice balls!

I passed one to Rengoku who didn't not hesitate to eat it.

Rengoku: Umai!

Yuki: Ohh it has some fillings. Mines had salmon

Rengoku: Mines did as well!

As we ate we kept walking, it was enough to stuff us up but we kept a few more in case we got hungry later.

Rengoku and I walked around the village for clues about the demon.

Rengoku: Excuse me! Have you seen a man eating demon!

He said it with a smile, he wasn't fazed at all. He was talking to this man and the man just stared at him weirdly. I put my hand behind Rengoku's head and made him slightly bow with me.

Yuki: I apologize for his outburst sometimes he can say random things.

I gave Rengoku a look and he looked the other way. I then looked back at the man again.

Yuki: Have you seen anything suspicious around the village?

Man: Well besides random people going miss not that much. Everyone has been on edge lately and scared to be coming out at night.

Yuki: (That's understandable, no one wants to go missing)

Man: But there has been this old looking man that would walk around the village in the middle of the night and walk into the forest. He pointed to the direction of the forest.

Yuki: I see

Rengoku: Thank you, sir!

Man: I uh, yeah sure
