Epilogue
The boy was asleep by the time the woman finished the story. He had missed the ending, but oh well. She could always read it again.
The mother stood up and put the book back on the shelf. She walked to the door and turned the light off. She closed the door behind her and sighed.
She walked down the hallway of her home. She passed a white bow with a silk string that was hung on display on the wall. A little bit farther down the hallway was one of those hanging plant pots. Growing inside it was a red water lily-like flower.
She walked outside. The moon was still high in the sky, shining down on her brightly. The wind blew, causing the trees that surrounded the place to move in the wind. The noise of the leaves and branches filled the air.
The woman took in the scent of the forest and stepped onto the grass. She made her way around the house, walking behind it. There was a gravestone there.
"Hi, Percy." She started, sitting down right in front of the grave. "Dennis is getting big. You would love him. He has your sense of humor."
She sighed.
"I read him your story today. He fell asleep about halfway through, but what are you gonna do?"
She looked around before reaching out and touching the grave gingerly.
"I miss you." She said. "It gets easier everyday. Just a little bit. But I wish you were here with me. So you could see your son laugh, and smile, and cry. I wish you were here so you could watch him take interest in archery. So you could help me teach him. I wish you were able to see him make a mess of his meals, and smile a smile so big that it's impossible to be mad about him. He's a great kid, and he deserves a great dad, which you would have been."
Artemis shifted to lay down on her side, her head pushed up against the headstone. "Good night Percy. I love you."
She closed her eyes.
Above her, the Guardian constellation glowed brightly. Percy might not have been there, but he was watching. And he couldn't have been prouder. Of both Artemis and Dennis.
He might not be with them physically, but he still watched over them.
Artemis was worth dying for, and he knew that he would die for his son, if he could. But he couldn't.
But he could watch. And watch he did.
A/N. And there we go! It's done! I will update this one more time in a couple of days, but that's just going to be my final thoughts. (For those of you who are new, at the end of my stories, I do a little final thoughts section where I explain how I feel about the story and some of my thoughts behind some decisions I made.) I'm going to wait a few days to post it so that way you can leave reviews with any questions you have left. This will be your final chance to get a response from me.
Thank you to Zaeng_ again for reading through this.
