Shrignold leads me into a beautifully decorated court. There rests a huge dark teal statue head. Its eyes were currently shut close, as if it's sleeping.

"That's Malcolm, our leader," noted the butterfly.

"But uhh that's just a statue head," I replied.

Shrignold laughed. "Malcolm is usually away to important missions and journeys so he keeps on touch to us using that."

A lil time skip bc I'm a lazy whore

I don't know why but I've been instructed to go inside a chamber and wait for the tasks to be given to me. They said if I finished all of those tasks, I'll get entitled to rise up in rank. I'm quite excited about getting a higher rank but I'm bit nervous too. I mean, there are a lot of possibilities of what will happen to you once you rank up. Either your life becomes easier or you face more dangerous missions and responsibilities.

This chamber feel quite cold and dark. Only a few blue-flamed torches lit up the whole place. It smells like burnt lavender and apples. I feel so lonely even though Doven was accompanying me. He keeps staring at me and asking me really personal questions and telling me some stuff that I don't even care about. I wanted to get out of here but if I do I might lose the change to rank up so I was left to no choice but stay.

"I got a scar right on my stomach," said Doven. "Do you have one in your stomach too?"

"Uhh no," I answered.

"I don't believe you. Please show me," he replied.

"No I..."

"Manny Sheldon, did I get your name right?" asked Usar, who just came into the chamber.

"If you're talking at me, yes you did," I said.

"Oh good, here's your first task."

The first task was to down 1000 giant creatures that look like a mix of scorpion and spider called stabres. I'm not the only one who have to slaughter them all. I'll be in a competition with 2 other members that are low ranked like me. The one that gets to kill the most stabres will be qualified for the next task.

I was thinking that I would be led outside this chamber towards the arena. My expectations got crushed as I witnessed the wall in front of me open. Beyond it was a passageway with lots of branches leading to various paths. Usar motioned me to follow him and I did. We walked through a few passageways until we reached a wide auditorium, which I assume is the battle arena. Clouds serve as walls. Various plants grow out of the clouds. My 2 opponents are a blue-skinned dwarf (a/n: no, this is not a Smurf bc fuck you /hj) and a bottle spray that has limbs, probably a former realm of spies resident.

"Wait for all the stabres to come out. Once they're all here, you may start," instructed Usar.

The huge cloud at the other end of the arena opened. A huge swarm of stabres came out. I did some little warms ups, making sure that I'll be ready. The huge hole on the cloud closes right after the 1000th stabre came out, indicating that we can start now. I ran towards those pesky monsters, ready to beat them up but I halted midway and produced a shield as soon as I found out they breathe fire!

I don't know most of the abilities of those creatures so slaughtering them seem really scary. For this situation, I'd need to use my powers but I'm scared because I might run out of mana in the middle of the task and faint out. In that way, I wouldn't get myself to rank up. But despite that, I still chose to use my powers to finish this task.

Just like what I've learned in my past experiences, I blasted my shield over one of the stabres, knocking it down. I blasted 2 beams of energy from each of my stretched hand which killed about 5  stabres. All of a sudden, I felt something cold and stingy behind me. I screamed and look behind me.

"Sorry my bad," chuckled the bottle spray and went off to another direction.

I turned around and almost dodged the stinging tail of a stabre behind me. Luckily, I managed to take its life away by plugging a lightning orb into its chest. At one side of the arena, I saw the blue dwarf trapped under the pinchers of another stabre. I was supposed to just mind my own business but I feel bad for him so I went and punched the stabre. My fist and arm went through the creature's body and it felt like as if my arm is burning.

Punching the stabre doesn't seem to be enough because it was still moving. I pulled my extended arm out. Then I raised my hands up in the air to form a huge sphere of energy and slammed the sphere right on the stabre. It got stunned to death. The midget looks at me, pleased.

"Thank you for saving me, young man," he said happily.

"You're welc..."

"However, this is a competition, SO I MUST BE ABLE TO KILL MORE STABRES THAN YOU!"

I was shocked when the blue dwarf just kicks me a mile away from him. To make things worse, I landed on a stabre right next to its stinger. The stabre grabs me and prepares to inject me with venom or whatever using its tail. Out of fright, I shooted ice into its face. The creature growls in frustration and tosses me to another stabre while breathing fire everywhere. I don't know what I accidentally touched but I felt strange sense crawl through my arms to my head. It's like as if ants went under my skin.

My head was throbbing with pain. I held my head, hoping the pain would go away. Suddenly, the stabre I was sitting on bent down on the ground like as if accepting defeat. I got confused. Why is it doing that? I stood up and went down to check what's happening. But as I did, the stabre stands up again and tilts its head to the other side.

I did few moments as an experiment and the huge creature imitated it all. That's when I realized, I can make it move according to my will! An idea appears into my brain. I rode on the stabre and looked at the others.

Prepare your stinger and your fire breath I commanded in my mind we're going for a bloodbath!

The stabre does its battle stance just as I did. I smiled and started using the creature like a selected character for an action video game. When I kick, it kicks. When I blast light beams, it breathes fire. Soon, only 4 stabres were left. My opponents and I slaughtered 3 of them and now the only remaining stabre is the one I'm controlling. The blue midget and the bottle spray, which was in her human form, slowly approaches me, desperate to kill my puppet.

"Remember, you're not the only one seeking a higher rank," said the spray lady.

"Let us share on the prize, you greedy wizard," added the dwarf.

I impulsively caused the stabre to knock them both out. Scared and guilty of what I've just done, I ran towards the other side of the arena. The creature I'm controlling does the same. All of a sudden, I remembered my goal. I summoned several lightning bolts out of nowhere and caused them to hit the stabre. Now that the creature is dead, I got nothing to control anymore. My head hurts again, like as if it's gonna explode.

Applauses rang from beyond the clouds. Looks like I've won the contest! I smiled and awkwardly tried to walk to my way out, hoping my headache would go away. However, it just worsen as I've soon felt really dizzy. One of my guesses is that I did ran out of mana. Before I could even reach the doorway, I collapsed on the ground and lost all my senses.
