Red Pov

Fear surged through me like a tidal wave, mixing with panic and anxiety, leaving me pale and trembling. This wasn't like dealing with regular bullies; this was a whole new level of danger. I was in a world where creatures devoured you or turned you into objects like pumpkins.

To make things worse, my tormentor wasn't just any bully. She was a siren—a mermaid! The realization hit me hard, and I knew I couldn't just sit there. What would she do? Cast a spell? Embarrass me? The possibilities raced through my mind.

Without thinking, I jumped up and headed for the exit, away from the guys at the table. Her voice called after me, but fear gripped me too tightly to respond. I had to get away.

But my escape was cut short. Two identical girls blocked my path, speaking in eerie unison. "Aubrey wants you," they said, their synchronized voices sending chills down my spine.

I looked at them, unnerved by how alike they were. Most twins tried to look different, but these two were like mirror images. Even their socks matched perfectly. It was creepy.

"I think you've got the wrong person," I said nervously, but they insisted they were looking for me.

"No, we know who we're looking for—you, Red," they said in perfect sync. Were they robots? How could the other students just watch without helping? But then again, no one wanted to cross Aubrey.

Before I could argue, Aubrey's voice cut through. "I see my little bird was trying to fly away," she teased, her beauty clashing with her malevolent tone.

"I don't know why you have a problem with..." I started, but she interrupted.

"My problem is you need to stay away from Xavier," she said firmly. I fought back a laugh. Xavier had been the one staring at me during class!

"I get it," I said, trying to calm things down.

"And I don't..." Aubrey stopped, her voice trailing off ominously.

"What did you say?" she demanded, her tone incredulous.

"I mean...I'm not interested in him, and I won't come near him. He's all yours," I said firmly, even though I was trembling inside. I tried to look confident, but fear was bubbling up inside me.

"Good," Aubrey said triumphantly before walking away with her friends, leaving me feeling relieved but still shaken. Jacob and my other friends came over, asking if I was okay.

"You really meant that?" Jacob asked, sounding impressed.

"Everyone in the cafeteria heard you loud and clear," he added, rolling his eyes.

"How are you feeling?" Avery asked, sounding concerned as she gently touched my arm.

"I need a drink," was all I could manage to say.

Finally, the school day ended, and I was grateful. It had been a day filled with high school drama, but thankfully, I hadn't found a love interest yet, making it less typical.

As I said goodbye to my friends, I realized I didn't have a place to stay anymore. Living with Uncle J didn't feel safe, but Avery had an idea.

"The academy is a boarding school," she told me, leading me towards another building nearby.

"Really?" I said, surprised.

"Yes, and we each have a roommate," she explained as we walked towards the grand building that housed the academy.

"Could you be my roommate?" I asked hopefully.

"I wish, but I already have one. But I know someone who doesn't, and we could be neighbors," she suggested.

We entered the building, and I was struck by its size and grandeur. Avery led me through the corridors until we reached a flight of stairs.

"How do we climb all those stairs?" I asked nervously.

"We don't. We fly," Avery said casually.

"Fly? Like in the air?" I asked, confused.

"Yes, come on," she said, leading me towards a carpet on the floor.

"Why are we standing on it?" I asked.

"You'll see," she said with a smirk.

Suddenly, the carpet lifted us off the ground, and we started floating in mid-air. I couldn't believe it, and my heart raced with excitement and fear.

"Don't freak out," I told myself, trying to stay calm as we soared through the air.

As the carpet lifted us higher, we soared towards the upper floors of the building. Avery signaled for us to step off, and we landed smoothly on solid ground.

Looking around, I saw rows of doors facing each other. It struck me that this was how the rooms were set up here.

"So, they're across from each other," Avery said, pointing to the opposing doors.

"Yeah," I nodded, still amazed by the magical ride we just had. I followed her quietly, the floor beneath us polished and silent, unlike the usual noisy hallways.

Curiosity got the better of me, and I asked about my new roommate. "What's she like?" I whispered, hoping for some insight.

Avery glanced at me, her voice low as she pointed to a door, indicating it was mine. "She's okay. Not too loud, not too quiet. But there's one thing you should know," she cautioned.

"What's that?" I leaned in to hear her better.

"She doesn't like physical contact," Avery warned, her voice filled with concern.
