Days later, the two owls had switched course suddenly. Once, when Riyu had created a small controlled fire near the middle of the Barrens with a loose tree branch, he saw three owls and a snake flying across a desert resembling Kuneer.
Rose and Riyu were not skeptics, but with Coryn, firesight was to be trusted. So, suspecting they were supposed to fly to Kuneer to meet this mysterious third owl and a snake, they hightailed it back.
They were at the edge of the Ambala and Kuneer border as the land ahead became rocky and few shrubs or trees were to be seen. They had come at a small foothill and decided to land on a low branch of a dense fir.
"See anything from the fire?" Riyu asked Rose as she peered at the desert, watching the sun set over the horizon. The ground was painted in red and orange, while the sky bled with colors of a vibrant purple and yellow.
"Nothing from here. Only desert and cacti, with few holes here and there. I can see some owls emerging, though, but most look much older than us." Both owls recalled how the owl was virtually smaller than them but seemed the size of their age, which might have been around a year or so.
Riyu sighed heavily. Was this trip worth it? Had he mistaken the Barrens for Kuneer? The only place they would turn back to was the Beyond, if at all. It was a long journey already, and it had turned out tough.
Both owls decided that the owls of Kuneer would probably just see them as passing through, so they rose into the night air.
What they didn't know was most native owls would've thought otherwise.
