"Happy birthday," he congratulated Iseul.
Ni-ki gave his present to Iseul in class, when everybody else did. Iseul wanted to appreciate his efforts, but he had made a big "DO NOT OPEN" sign on the gift bag. Other than that, all Iseul could tell about the gift was that it was decorated with gold glitter since the gift bag was shed all over the place. Iseul wondered why he had to give it to her to hold all day when she couldn't even open it.
Ni-ki had given no hints to as what Iseul's gift was. Somehow his face remained straight the whole morning and during the school day. And even after constant nagging and poking, he wouldn't break.
He could not break. He would not show how excited he was for her to open her gift. For his own pride and dignity, he didn't.
He waited until after school was over. All of their friends were following her like baby ducklings with their momma. Iseul wanted to get away from the city a little bit. They all scanned their cards and got on the subway headed towards the beach.
It was a little awkward at first. Ni-ki and Iseul got seats solely based off of the first come first serve basis, so the rest of them had to stand there. Jaywon were completely in their own world, with Jay back-hugging Jungwon. Jake and Sunghoon were having a staring contest, with Jake winning because Sunghoon got distracted by Sunoo's obnoxious laugh. Heeseung was the eighth wheel, so he just watched as his kids played together.
The ride was going to be upwards of two hours, so Ni-ki didn't hesitate to get comfortable. He pulled on his jacket, closed his eyes, and leaned his head on her shoulder. Iseul rolled her eyes, but was glad that he made contact first. As they got closer, everybody else snagged seats too. At first everyone looked at them a little weird, but eventually they all fell asleep too. Iseul made sure no one was looking, and ran her hand through his hair gently so that she wouldn't wake him.
She had already planned to get her cake from a teeny tiny cake shop at their destination. She picked out her choices, strawberry shortcake, tiramisu, and a large chocolate cake that all the boys could share because boys are like little babies.
Surprisingly, it was the perfect weather for a picnic. The sun was shining but there were a good amount of fluffy clouds and a tiny breeze that kept the air flowing.
Unsurprisingly, she was the only one who brought a blanket, other than Ni-ki who she forced to bring one by reminding him a thousand times.
