Sometimes it's hard to explain what you know and how you know it. Know what I mean?

As it turned out... There was a reason after all though it brought Maggie little closure. The circumstances regarding her violent attack... She was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Hikaru had been waiting for a certain someone.. the young chef Yuji had spoken to when he first learned of Hikaru.. She was not the intended target but Hikaru was deranged, blinded by lust and a need for power so when Maggie had excused herself to the lady's room, she was attacked. Instead of leaving the young woman he'd knocked out in a fit of rage and impatience, Hikaru had simply thrown the woman over his shoulder and left out of the building's side entrance... an entrance rarely used and that was supposed to be inaccessible. The bodyguard Yuji had tasked with escorting Maggie and her mother was killed in action...
Test results... a single photograph.. an ultrasound..
Prescriptions with the messy signatures of doctors... trauma therapists..Maggie was reading over the complete report and started to get a headache. Maggie gripped the file tightly, causing it to crumple around the edges. The trembling of her clammy hands
Yuji took the papers from Maggie's hands and sighed. He braced the pages on the edge of their coffee table, smoothing them out silently before arranging them quickly and returning them to their folder. When Yuji was satisfied with his tidying up, he placed the file under his arm and turned back toward the hallway. There was a specific spot for most files in the home and he made sure to keep all of his wife's files stored away the best he could. Yuji descended the stairs of the clean basement and placed the file in its now vacant spot.
Yuji should have been more careful but he hadn't expected her to read the file. He had gone to the bathroom after verifying some information with the new therapist... leaving the file on the table. An idiotic move..
"... Explain this.. now..!"
Maggie forced the words out through clenched teeth. She was sitting on her knees, fingers digging into the fabric of her jeans. The headache was intensifying and she applied pressure to her left eye with the back of her palm, feeling the tension.Yuji had started walking toward the kitchen and was rummaging around for medicine. Thankfully, all of her medicine was organized inside of a cabinet low enough for Maggie to reach, each box wrapped in plastic and stacked neatly; her own personal pharmacy.
A glass of water and two green pills were handed off to Maggie which she deposited into her mouth with quick haste, downing the water just as quickly. She closed her eyes, willing the headache to leave.
Lord, please have mercy on me.. she pleaded internally. She felt like her head was about to explode. Everything was bothering her now but the medicine kicked in half an hour later. She took deep, timed breaths then she was finally able to focus on the task at hand. Maggie stood in front of her husband with an annoyed look.
"Yuji...""It's your police report along with medical examinations.. That's what this is. You haven't laid eyes on it for about seven years I think.." Yuji explained, looking away in a thoughtful, pondering way. Seven years... Had they really come and gone that quickly? It was as if he had blinked and everything had been so.. different.
Maggie placed her fists against his chest, her body trying its best to work through the plethora of emotions that caused her temperature to spike. She couldn't think straight.. she couldn't focus properly.. Yuji was speaking but she couldn't focus on what exactly he was explaining to her. Why couldn't she remember this.. Something as important as this. The proof.. evidence of her ordeal.. The past..
Seven years...
"That's a lie..." Maggie shot back. She shook her head and fixed him with a concerned look. "This is the first time I'm seeing this, Yuji... How could you hide something like this from me?" Maggie was close to tears and searching his eyes for the answers her brain couldn't pinpoint.
Yuji cut his eyes to her and his eyes went to her clenched hands.
"It's not... In fact..."
Yuji started and took a seat in front of the couch his wife was previously sitting on. He crossed his legs and leaned forward, elbows on his thighs while he propped his head on one of his hands. "This is the third time you've read that file."Maggie staggered, feeling like a powerful blow had been dealt to her. It couldn't be.. She usually remembered everything that she read..
"I would have remembered it, you know."
Maggie laughed nervously. She wrung her hands together and started to pace. "I've got the memory of an elephant.. remember? I would have remembered. I just..."Yuji placed his hand on top of her head and nodded in agreement.
"I know. My precious little elephant.." Yuji hummed. He wrapped his arms around Maggie and walked them backward into the couch. Yuji placed Maggie in his lap and placed his hands palm up against hers."Do you feel better now...? Are you happier now?"
He asked her.Maggie let her body relax against him and she squeezed his hands.
"Why would it make me happy? That file was.. a tough read..""Your body is protecting itself.. Your mind. Do you blame it? Memories are painful..."
He spoke.Yuji turned Maggie around in his lap and brought her lips so close to his own. Their noses were touching and Yuji rested his forehead against hers.
"Don't be angry with me... And don't be angry at yourself because you can't remember all the details... Commit this to memory instead.." he spoke against her cheek. Yuji took her face into his hands and kissed her softly on the lips."For better or for worse.."
Maggie nodded.
"Look.. your past doesn't define you. Not for me. I won't let this define you... YOU won't let this define you. We. Are. Resilient."
Yuji spoke clearly and carefully.Maggie wiped a tear from her eye and nodded enthusiastically.
"We are."Yuji held her close and looked at the clock hanging on the wall. They'd be sitting down for a relaxing dinner in two hours at one of Maggie's favorite places. The therapy sessions had been so intense this week..
"I love you Maggie."***********************************************
