The next morning...
Everett Ross exited the vehicle, coming over to one of the officers overseeing the chaos that had unfolded on the bridge the previous evening.
'Ross, from the agency,' he said, shaking the hand of the officer firmly. 'We got any witnesses?'
'None. But we think it was the Wakandans. We did pull someone up from the water though. She was pretty badly concussed and lost a lot of oxygen.' He nodded over to an ambulance that was nearby, and I was sitting on the doorstep to the back of the ambulance, my knee jittering up and down nervously as two police officers stood next to me, trying to get a statement from me. He looked back at the officer.
'Excuse me?'
'Our field office got a tip from Langley that they were coming.'
'Right. Who made that call?'
'She did,' he said, nodding over to a nearby car. The woman fell into step beside Ross and the two walked through the scene together.
'Director de Fontaine,' Ross said.
'Really?' she asked with a slight tone of indignation towards the title.
'Well... Agent thinks it was the Wakandans.'
'Yeah, we've been on every one of them since they took out our ship. That's why I wanted you here.' She gave him a side-eye through her glasses. 'You're looking good.'
'Oh. Well, I try.'
'You put that home gym in?'
'Yeah. Last year.'
'Maybe I'll drop by sometime and jump on your Peloton,' Valentina remarked as they came over to the ambulance where I was sitting. The police officers left me as the two came to stand over me. I looked up at her and laughed.
'You're standing in my light.' I squinted up at them. 'Not that there isn't much. Being the director of the CIA looks good on you, Val.'
'I thought you knew I didn't like to be called that.'
'I don't care.' I gave a side-eye to Ross, but barely regarded him.
'You do understand you've got a bit of a warrant out ever since you started working with the Wakandans?'
'Oh, the whole FBI shit back at that warehouse? I literally don't give a shit. You can kiss my ass, because I've got a job to do.'
'And that includes sticking your nose in things where it doesn't belong?' Valentina snapped.
'Yes. It does. Because when you have the queen of Wakanda call for your personal aid on an attack by mercenaries at an outreach centre, and then have to save a teenager from a psycho mutant sea king, then yes, it becomes my problem. As does the ever-growing pain in my ass that you and the feds are.'
'The CIA will have to detain you until your husband comes to get you or until you get a hearing. Until then, don't make a mess of things.'
'Well, my head's pretty banged up, and I feel like crap, so yeah - I'm not going anywhere, Director.' Valentina and Everett walked away, coming over to the evidence nearby of the events of the previous evening. One of the detectives came over, sticking his hand out to Valentina.
'Howdy,' he said. 'Special agent in charge.'
'Oh, good for you,' she replied sarcastically. 'So, do you want to walk me through the evidence here, or what?'
