Guy Germaine was holding my hand while we skated together.
All of us Ducks, the original ducks, were heading to Eden Hall for Orientation or something like that. To be honest, I wasn't paying that much attention when Bombay was talking.
"Nice tie, Banks." Charlie teased.
"Cake-eater." Guy added.
Adam shot Guy a look, before saying, "My mom made me wear it."
The rest of the ride would have been smooth, if Goldberg hadn't gotten off track again, and Charlie had to go after him. Ten minutes later, we arrived at the prep school.
"Let's go through the back." Averman said.
"Do you know how unsmart that sounds?" I asked.
They ignored me, and we shuffled around. "I think we're back stage."
Before anything else could be said, Goldberg tripped, knocking into Guy, who made me and Connie fall, which resulted in everyone else falling. We moved the curtain, and Guy helped me up. We looked up, and saw the whole school.
"Hi." Charlie said. "We're the Ducks."
I lowered my head, listening to everyone as they laughed at us. I felt Guy grab my hand, and I squeezed it, trying to find comfort in him.
We made our way off the stage, and by then, the assembly was over, so we headed to the main lobby area.
"Charlie, man, this is not a good way to start our year." Kenny said, looking nervous.
"Don't worry too much, Kenny." I told him. "I'm sure it'll be fine."
"Check it out," Charlie said. "Antsville."
"You can learn a lot from ants."
We looked up and saw Dean Buckley. "These Brazilian fire ants can teach you a lot about successful societal structure. You see there's a queen in there. The rest are dedicated worker ants. Everybody pulls their own weight. Nobody complains. There's harmony and growth. Same here at Eden Hall. Only you're the workers, the backbone."
"And you're the queen?" Russ questioned.
Dean sighed, and said, "You all had an interesting start to the day." We all avoided eye contact. "But why don't we start on a clean slate. I have your schedules here."
After he passed them out, we all started comparing them.
"Hey, I think Guy made his and Allison's schedules." Averman teased. "He and Allison have every class together."
The other laughed, and I giggled as I watched Guy's face redden. I had almost every class with Goldberg as well, and everyone else was scattered here and there. I looked at Guy again, and for some reason, my heart pounded harder then it normally did when he smiled.
