8: Could've Stopped It

I don't think Swiss slept very well. I was woken up a couple times by him moving or making a small noise. I could tell he was trying not to wake me, which made my heart ache. I was grateful when the sun finally rose, and I was able to get up without making it look like he woke me up.

As I moved out from under the covers, he made a tired whining sound as he turned onto his back. His face scrunched open in pain for a second as he probably remembered his untreated injuries. I stretched my arms into the air, my eyes squinting with the sensation. I looked over to the freezer, then back to Swiss. He was clearly awake by now, but he kept his eyes closed. I decided to set to work.

I pulled two ice packs out of the freezer before walking back to Swiss. "What do you have?" He must've heard the rustle of the packs in my hand, for his eyes were still closed.

"Ice packs." I responded simply, sitting down beside him on the couch. He opened his eyes slightly, raising a brow as he looked at me. His gaze fell down to the cold packs, and when he caught my expectant eyes, he groaned quietly. He pushed himself onto his elbows, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes with the back of his wrist. I watched him as he worked to sit up against the back cushion, ready to assist him if it was needed.

However, he made it to a full upright position, flashing me a victorious smile. I shook my head, moving myself to get closer to him. "Do you think you have a broken rib?" I questioned, glancing towards the area where I remembered Aether kicking.

Swiss just shrugged, his eyes unmoving as he looked at me. "Can I check?" I wagged the icepack through the air.

I noticed him hesitate, looking between me and the icepack. "I'm good, Fenris." He tilted his head, smiling softly. "All I need is some ibuprofen and I'll be fine." I couldn't help but feel the slight apprehensiveness coming from him as he averted his gaze. Maybe the change of mood was just from the fact that he's injured, but then again, he basically woke up with a smile on his face.

The idea of not properly treating his wounds made me nervous. "Swiss, ibuprofen isn't going to fix it." I narrowed my eyes in an attempt to get my point across.

Swiss ran his hand through his messy hair, letting out a quiet sigh. "I'm a ghoul, right? I'll be healed in another day if we're lucky." His voice was calm and somewhat distant. The way he just didn't seem to care bothered me quite a bit. One would think that since Swiss was the one who was hurt, he'd try to cooperate, but apparently not.

I sighed quietly, trying to think of what else to do. "Are you hungry? The pizza's still there if you'd like." He shook his head, tilting his chin up as he leaned against the back of the couch. Perhaps he was just tired, maybe a little out of it.

When he didn't say anything else, I stood up and headed back towards the kitchen. I put the ice packs back before making a glass of water. When it was filled to the top, I set it on the counter and started to shuffle through the cabinets in search for medicine. "It's the very last one to the right!" Swiss' voice rung out. I paused for a second, looking over my shoulder towards where he his head was on the couch. Well, he certainly didn't sound too tired just then.

I moved my way to the cabinet he mentioned, and as he had said, all the medicine was there. I scanned the labels, twisting the bottles around when they faced away from me. It didn't take long before I found some ibuprofen. I took it and closed the door, grabbing the water and heading towards Swiss. I threw him the small medicine bottle—which he caught— and set the water on the part of the coffee table nearest him.

He twisted off the lid, reaching forward to grab the glass. "Thanks." He murmured, leaning further back into the couch. I turned myself away for a moment, not looking towards anything in particular. When I turned back, I think I saw at least half the bottle of pills in the ghoul's hand.
