O P I A . . .
CHAPTER FOUR
❛ and here i thought i would be the one with no manners ❜███████████████████████████████████
after eating dinner, jason followed maya to campfire where they sat at the front. annabeth soon found maya after they split to sit with their cabins, taking a seat next to them. jason couldn't help but feel like an outsider. he was completely new to this, even if he didn't remember his past the warmth of the fire and bustling comfort despite todays conflict felt unusual.
and unfortunately for him, maya wasn't as greeting as he thought. minus the few laughs and sarcastic smiles slipped in buzzes of conversation everything eventually came to a lull.
jason spotted leo, he was sitting with a bunch of burly-looking campers under a steel gray banner emblazoned with a hammer. maya noticed his line of sight.
"your friend is alright. he's with his cabin - hephaestus. his family," she said, her voice suddenly talking a low tone.
jasons hand quivered. "i'd like to think he's my friend but the truth is, i don't know him."
maya spared him a short glance. "does anyone really know you? do you really know anyone?"
"no, i don't," he answered, thankful that maya didn't reply with pity. she just kept quiet.
his thoughts overshadowed the sound coming from a half a dozen campers with guitars and lyre that were leading a song about pieces of armor, something about how their grandma got dressed for war.
jason thought about everything. how he woke up today on a bus he's never seen before. about how he woke up next to the girl sitting next to him, holding his hand. he felt guilty. that he didn't remember. because it seemed that leo cherished him as a friend and piper, well as something more than that. and yet here he was, completely clueless.
and then there was maya. the scarily calm and experienced demigod who didn't seem particularly shaken by anything. almost as if she expected the worst. jason felt like if anyone was gonna figure out this situation it was going to be her, or annabeth. even though he didn't know her long, maya was smart and not only that, she was powerful. no one had to tell him that.
the way she carried herself, the respect other campers gave her, the comment she made about a titan in the fifteenth cabin. they were all proof. and if jason wanted to find out more, and not die he would need her help.
and then there was the fact he knew nothing. who he was, his past. the slightest sliver of his memory remained. a girl. he couldn't quite make out her face but he could distinctly see her glossy black hair tied back into a long braid. she was standing next to a boy, his tousled brown hair hung over his tan skin. he didn't even know their names. but for some reason they felt familiar, almost like home.
