I watched in silence as the took him away back to his cell, it made me sad to think that he spent his days in a cold, cramped cell.
He killed people I reminded myself but I couldn't help but feel bad, despite what he did, he didn't deserve the kind of isolated life he was forced to live, he had lost so much, his own face even, it was unfair.
His whole life was unfair, everyone who cared for him was either dead, missing, or testified against him in court.
It was odd, I had never felt that level of sympathy for a patient before, that level of sadness, the disgusting feeling churned in my stomach. All I wanted was to tell him that it wasn't his fault that his life sucked, it wasn't his fault that his stepbrother took his own life, or that his mother died. I wanted to hug him, to hold him close and tell him how terrible everything that he went through was, he didn't deserve any of it.
That would be unprofessional. I told myself, I could lose my job. And over a patient I had known for an hour.

I can't think like that, it's far too dangerous for me to let myself swoon over killers.
I repeated that to myself as I left my office, making sure to lock the door behind me, and headed home for the night, finally able to relax after a long day of talking to criminals and people who were actually crazy.
I stopped myself.
Actually crazy? What did I mean actually, sure I thought there could be some truth what Sal said but to think he wasn't even crazy?
