(Steven's POV)
Let me be clear: Any feelings I had for Connie are gone. Especially now that I not only have a new girlfriend who genuinely seems to care about me but now that I also know how Connie's Mom truly feels about me. And you'd think I'd be angry or more hurt about it, but honestly? Being with Mabel pretty much caused any feelings of hurt I had to drift away.
However, even as we spent time together, I could tell she was worried about me. But I didn't want her to worry. I knew the dangers of bottling up my feelings and not being upfront about how I feel about things but I didn't want Mabel to think she had to worry about me. She's a cute and upbeat girl and I don't want to bring her down. But I can tell she's worried.
"Steven. Can I ask you something?" Mabel asked as we sat down on the bench near the boardwalk and enjoyed the sea breeze. I was silent for a moment but smiled.
"Sure Mabel. What's on your mind?" I asked, even though I already knew the answer: It was about what I asked her earlier about if I was good enough for her. She wants to know why I'd ask her that. I can't lie to her.
"Earlier, why did you ask me if you were good enough for me? Is something wrong?" She asked as I sighed and was about to explain until Connie and Jeff approached us.
"Hey Steven. Hey.....um....what was your name again?" Connie asked as Mabel gave her a look.
"Mabel Pines. And I'm guessing you're Connie? You're the girl who we saw the other day at the amusement park. What do you want?" She asked as Connie looked at her before looking at me.
"Steven, listen. I just wanted to say that it's not anything personal, OK? I lost control of my life and my feelings and this was the result." She said as I looked at her and Jeff. But before I could say anything...
"Listen to me now: I'm starting to put two and two together and whatever reason Steven asked me if he was good enough for me for has something to do with you. I'll be honest: If you're causing him this much stress? Maybe YOU'RE the one who's not good enough for him!" Mabel snapped as Jeff looked angry.
"Hey! Don't talk to her like that! Who do you think you are?!?" He snapped as he got in Mabel's face. That set me off as I got up, my skin already turning Pink as I got right in his face.
"She's my girlfriend. So take yours and get out of here!" I snapped as Jeff and Connie backed down and left as everyone around us looked as I calmed down.
"Steven, are you OK? Thank you for standing up for me, but I'm worried about you." Mabel said as I sighed and smiled.
"I'll be fine. The less I see of them, the better. Now let's continue our date, OK?" I said as Mabel smiled and kissed me on the cheek as we got back in the Dondai and drove. I decided to check in with the Gems at Little Homeworld to let them know what's going on. Once we arrived, I could practically feel the looks of Amethyst, Lapis and Peridot and could hear them chuckling.
"Aww! Steven and his girlfriend came to visit us! How sweet!" Amethyst said as Lapis and Peridot laughed along with the Little Homeworld Gems. Why did she always have to do this to me?
"Amethyst, enough. Stop making fun of Steven.... we'll have plenty of time for that later." Garnet said with a smirk as I gave her a look before Mabel spoke.
"What's that Connie girl's problem?" She asked as Garnet and Pearl's expression turned serious.
"Wha? What did she do this time? I thought she was with some other boy? Why is she still bothering you guys?" Amethyst asked as I explained what happened.
"Say what? So Connie's new boyfriend thinks he's tough, huh? I'd love to see him try that kind of crap while one of us were there!" Amethyst snapped as Mabel smiled.
"Don't worry. Steven was there and put the guy in his place. But what's going on? Why does Connie seem to cause Steven so much stress? Do you guys know?" She asked.
"That's for you to tell her, Steven. And I think since we're all family and friends here, you should open up." Pearl said as I sighed and nodded.
"Alright. Mabel, you already know part of the story or at least the base of it: Connie's Mom and the Gems and my Dad shot down the idea of Connie and me in a relationship. This led to me meeting you and I don't regret it." I said as Mabel smiled.
"Then why do you seem so sad?" Mabel asked as I looked at the Gems. Garnet and Pearl nodded as did Lapis. I then looked back at Mabel.
"Connie's Mom didn't want me dating her daughter but had no issue with Jeff dating her. That and the fact that Dad and I went over there earlier and she outright said that she didn't think I was what Connie needed in a boyfriend made me believe that I wasn't good enough." I explained as Mabel then kissed me and hugged me, tears in her eyes.
"Who cares what either of them think, Steven? They can say whatever they want: You're good enough for me. Who cares if you're good enough for Connie or her Mom? You're not dating either of them. You're dating me! And I think you're more than good enough! Dipper, Pacifica, Wendy! They all think you're good enough!" She exclaimed.
"And we think you're good enough. We're proud of you, Steven. For how far you've come and how much you've grown over the years." Garnet said with a smile.
"Honestly, that should be something you should never doubt, Steven. You've always been good enough. More than good enough." Pearl said as I smiled.
"Thanks everyone. I appreciate it." I said.
"They love you. And so do I, Steven." Mabel said with a smile as the two of us shared a kiss right there in Little Homeworld.
"Ah get a room, you two!" Amethyst exclaimed until Lapis elbowed her.
It didn't matter what Connie or her Mom thought about me. As long as the people who mattered in my life thought so, I'd always be good enough.
