The wind whipped across his face, blowing his hair every-which way, but he couldn't find it in himself to care. The pounding of his heart was something he could only hear distantly as his mind all but left his body behind in his desperation to be by his mate's side, facing the danger down as well.
His instincts sang with the surging of his blood in his veins, and he couldn't have said what exactly he was following that was leading him to his mate, but he knew with absolute certainty that he was flying toward the other man, and not away. He ignored the way the muscles of his shoulders strained with the effort of keeping up such a speed, letting his mind reach out for his mate's.
It was something that he'd only tried a couple of times, but he needed to know that the Doctor was still alive. It was a burning need that had seen him leaping up into the sky without a word to his recently reincarnated friend, leaving him behind without so much as a thought. He'd feel bad about that later, once his mind could focus on more than the dread that had shut down all his higher processes.
The only thought running through his head was 'No, no, no, no,' repeated over and over again. Everything else had been drowned out by the sensations still coming from his bonds. Terror had made way for dread, and then a grim, dogged determination that he was becoming familiar with as the Doctor's go-to when things went bad.
That was all secondary though, and his mind chose to stay stuck in the quagmire of fear that coursed through his body.
His consciousness burst through their bond, ignoring the barrier that had existed between them for the entire time their bond had existed as thought it wasn't even there. It was like occupying two places at once, he realised as he blinked hard, trying to adjust. He was still in his body, flying desperately through the air, but at the same time, he was taking up space in the Time Lord's mind, and somehow, looking through his eyes.
'Wha-' he started, only to cut himself off as the wrong voice came out of his throat. He very nearly fell right out of the sky as the realisation hit him. He had somehow managed to possess his mate, all while still being in his own body.
Haylen, I need my body back, I'm in the middle of something right now, the Doctor's voice said from all around him. He spun around, taking in the underground room absently as he tried to figure out where the other man's voice was coming from. He realised what had happened at the same time that he met Amy's eyes again.
She was staring at him like he was something that she needed to be afraid of, he thought, as confusion and just a hint of pain wound their way through him. Why would she be looking at him like that, he wondered. Was there an obvious tell that he wasn't the Doctor? Not that it mattered, he hastily reminded himself, he wasn't going to be making a habit of this. If he could just figure out how to do it, he'd give the Doctor his body back and never make this particular mistake again.
'What's happening?' Amy whispered, the fear written plainly over her face as she stared at him. It wasn't a look that he was used to seeing on his sister's face, and if he wasn't trying to work out how to get his mind to disconnect with the Doctor's, he'd be hurt that she could ever feel that way about him.
It's alright, Haylen, just calm down, the Doctor said softly. We're alright, and River's on her way back to the Romans for backup. It'll be alright.
He wanted to believe the other man, he really did, but there was the fact of the emotions he'd been besieged by earlier. How could his mate stand there and reassure him when he'd been so far past terrified that they almost needed a new word to describe it?
'What happened?' he demanded, talking more to his mate's mind than the only other person standing in the room. It was more than strange to speak and hear the Doctor's voice, and he very much did not like it.
