Picnic at Asgard

The Tardis landed with her usual flare, lights flashing, and engines making the oh-so iconic sound that he loved, and the Doctor smiled. He looked up at the rotor, watching the way it settled now that she'd finished landing.

'Thanks, Sexy,' he whispered, petting the console lightly.

'Ahem!'

The Doctor jumped, spinning to look at his human companion, hearts beating madly in his chest. 'Don't do that!'

Amy raised an eyebrow at him, shoving her hands into the pockets of her too-short denim skirt with an innocent look on her face. 'Do what? I didn't do anything.'

He narrowed his eyes and waggled a finger at her. 'You know what you did.'

'So,' she said, eyes lighting up with excitement, 'where are we?'

He could feel the corner of his mouth lifting as the excitement radiated off of Amy in waves. Maybe he'd lost another companion, but he still had two of them with him, and this right here, this was why he travelled. The sheer joy and wonder of the universe that the humans could feel. It made him feel those same feelings all over again.

'Asgard!' he said brightly. 'Now, where's your brother gotten off to?'

He looked back up the stairs, waiting for his Angel to appear. The man had been hard to find in the past few days. He couldn't say that he didn't understand, but it still hurt, he thought as he sent a mental probe through their connection.

'Ugh,' Amy said, letting her head hang backward at the thought of her brother. The Doctor raised an eyebrow as he waited, turning to look back at her. 'He's being weird. He might not even bother coming on this one.'

'Oh, I think this is one he'll like,' the Doctor said. He'd come here as a special treat for the Angel. Amy might have been more affected by Rory's death, but Haylen actively remembered the man. That was why he wanted to come to Asgard, to show him that life goes on.

He turned back to the stairs, and jumped again as he came face to face with the other man. Haylen had obviously joined them while he'd been talking to Amy, but neither of them had heard him.

His hearts did a funny little flip in his chest as he took in how close the Angel was standing. He knew that Haylen had trouble with social cues, but that traitorous part of him that he kept trying to bury, hoped that it showed that Haylen wanted to be closer to him.

He squeaked, words escaping him as Haylen tilted his head to the side, eyes such a breathtaking blue at a distance of only an inch away.

'Hay,' Amy said, reaching out and pulling the Angel back a couple of steps, 'too close. We talked about this.'

'Right,' Haylen said, a cute little frown creasing his brow.

The Doctor coughed, clearing his throat awkwardly as he saw the look that Amy was giving him. It was the strangest cross between teasing and threatening, and he wasn't sure how she was managing it. 'Right, yes, so! Asgard!'

He reached up to fix his bow-tie, and bounded off toward the doors. Once Amy was no longer giving him that look, and Haylen was a safe distance away from him, the Doctor breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't that he didn't want the other man that close to him, definitely not. He was actually pretty interested in finding out exactly how it would feel to have him that close more often, but maybe not in front of the man's sister.

He threw the doors open with a flourish, motioning for his companions to go first. Normally, he might choose to go out first just to check, but he was pretty sure that the Tardis would want to do something nice for the twins as well.
