Chapter Four.

Steve McGarrett’s POV

Today was another one of those rare occasions where we didn’t have a case. Kono had taken Kailee out to do some shopping and go to the movies; I had offered but I was told that no one could be seen shopping with dad; unless it was when she was older and my credit card was unlimited. When I had asked Danny about it, he confirmed that this was only reason Grace now took him shopping. Danny had joined me for  the afternoon after he had dropped Grace off with her friends in the town centre.

“I’ve missed this man,” Danny laughed when we sat down in some wooden chairs at the end of my garden. We had a pack of beer between us and half was already gone.

“Tell me about it, everything has been chaos lately” I replied downing the last dregs of beer, I took another bottle and popped the cap.

“Yeah how are you?” Danny asked concerned.

“I’m okay. Kailee is doing great, she struggling a bit because I have to work a lot and that means leaving her; I now understand how you felt when Grace was younger” I sympathised with Danny.

“I didn’t ask about Kai, I asked about you. You’ve been distracted lately,” he said setting the bottle down on the table and facing me. Damn, I hated it when Danny decided to get sentimental; because it always meant that he wanted me to spill my guts and Navy Seals just don’t; end of story.

“I’m fine man,” I said trying to get out of this whole feelings thing.

“Don’t, I know something is wrong and you will tell me” he said smugly “I leant a few things while being a real detective in Jersey” I turned to him and smiled. There was no way he was going to get anything.  “Don’t look at me like that Steven I will set your worst enemy on you,” she laughed rubbing hands together.

“Oh yeah and what’s that?” I inquired.

“A worried daughter” he purred knowing he had the hit the spot.

You wouldn’t” I spluttered. But I saw the look on his face and knew he would. I hated it when Kailee got concerned for me, she would turn into this mother figure and not leave me alone until I gave her something.

“You know I would, so spill” I glared it at him knowing I wasn’t going to get out of this.

“I miss her,” I said standing up and walking further down the beach so I was standing just before the water.

“Is she coming back?” he asked, I hadn’t realised that he had followed me down, on the sand Danny was oldly quite usually he was stomping about creating as much noise as he could.

“Maybe, she said that she had things to do. She wanted to excel and when she got the promotion there was nothing holding her back” I replied sighing. The women that I had loved left, she had told me that unless I wanted to start and family and settle down then she was leaving and very unlikely coming back. I just wish I knew that what I really was a family and not find out seven months later when I adopt Kailee.

“She was the only one to except you as well” he winked nudging me with his shoulder. I knew he was trying to lighten the mood.

“Yes, Danny. Are you going to find every excuse to bring it up?” I asked looking down at him. Danny had found it amusing when he found out about my preferred night-time antics. He only found out about it when we had a case and a club member that we were interviewing recognised me and spilt everything in front of him. I think I could have killed her there and then.
