Problems of Interpretation

Miles woke up in a cold sweat from a nightmare. In the nightmare, he was back in high school and he had been told he needed to pass trigonometry in order to graduate. It was the day of the final exam and he felt violently ill.

But then there was a ray of hope. He was sitting directly behind Jennifer, his ex-girlfriend. She looked confident and seemed totally at ease with the exam.

Of course, he tried to cheat off her paper. She circled one answer after another without a care in the world. Yet whenever he tried to sneak a peak at her paper, it was completely blank. Even the problems were missing.

Miles had a passing curiosity in the topic of dream interpretation. He read that exam dreams are extremely common and represent anxiety. His job was stressful so that was probably his main source of anxiety. Maybe he was anxious that he would end up alone. That would explain why his ex figured so prominently in the dream.

Or maybe he would be inspired to take trig again and Jennifer would join him. Two adults, thirty-five years old, learning about sines and cosines.
