When I got to the scene, the rest of the team was already there and they had began taking pictures.
I got out of my car and grabbed my notebook from the back seat. Tony texted me a few minutes ago and told me there was a witness and that I would be in charge of getting the statement and possible sketch of the suspect.
Ziva came over to greet me as I was grabbing my things. "She matches the profile of the victims. Late 20's, navy," Ziva filled me in. "The witness is over there, she claims she saw a man dump the body behind this gas station."
"Alright, I'll go get her statement," I give Ziva a nod as we go in opposite directions.
I reach the woman who claimed to see what happened. The woman looks to be in her mid to late 60's, she also seemed very shook up likely from seeing the dead body. "Hello ma'am, I'm Special Agent Monroe with NCIS, as I understand, you got a look at the man who dumped the girls body?" I kindly say to the woman.
"Oh dear, yes, yes I saw him, it was an awful sight." She shuddered.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"I'm Sharon Miller," She replied
"Okay Sharon, why don't we sit down and you can explain to me what happened from the very beginning?" I gave her a kind smile and I put my hand on her shoulder to lead her to a bench in front of the gas station.
She nodded and let me guide her to take a seat. After we were both settled on the bench, I got my pen and notepad ready. I gave her a nod to indicate I was ready.
"So I was just mindin' my own business, I had stopped here to get a quick snack on the way home from visiting my daughter. I was on my way back to my car when I saw someone snooping around the side of the building. I looked over and saw a man dragging what looked like a body bag. I immediately rushed to my car and called the police." She explained. I could hear the fear in her voice. Her voice was shaky, and would cut off at points.
I wrote quickly to keep up with what she was saying to me. "Did you see what he looked like?" I looked up at her after I finished writing.
"Yes, yes I got a good look at him." She quietly replied.
"Do you think you could describe him good enough for me to do a sketch?" Sometimes I wished Tony had never found my sketchbook. I hate doing suspect sketches. If he hadn't found my sketchbook then the team never would've found out I was good at drawing.
"Maybe, I can try, I want to help-" She broke off and began to cry.
"It's alright, just do your best to describe him." I gave her a reassuring smile.
She began to describe him, short dark brown hair, cleanly shaven face, cold almond shaped eyes, rectangle face, tall, muscular. I began to panic as the more I drew, the more the sketch looked like my boyfriend. I must have twisted her description. I had drawn Adam so many times before it must have just been muscle memory. Yet, I forced myself to finish the sketch.
When I finished, I looked at the final result. I shook my head, it was unsettling how much it looked like Adam. I took a deep breath and paused before showing her.
I turned the paper around to show her the face. She flinched and replied, "That's him"
I froze, but then I remembered another step, "Did you manage to see his car? Maybe a license plate?"
"Yes dear, the vehicle was some type of suburban maybe? It was a blueish color. The plate was 33419? Or 44319?" She paused for a second. "Oh goodness I'm so sorry I can't remember which one it was."
"It's alright, you've already helped us so much. Why don't you go home and get some rest. If you remember anything more, give me a call," I handed her my card and stood up. I knew for a fact that wasn't Adams vehicle. It must just be a coincidence.
I went back over to the team. They seemed to just be finishing up with the pictures.
"Anything good from the witness?" Tony asked as he saw me join the group.
I nodded, "Yeah actually, she was very helpful. I got a full statement, suspect description, vehicle description, and even a possible plate."
"Wow, why can't every witness be that helpful?" Tony joked as he walked closer to me. "Can I see the sketch?"
I paused for a second, I wasn't sure how the team would react to the sketch looking so much like Adam. I sighed and took the sketch out to show Tony.
He took it from my hands and stared for a second, frowning, "This is the sketch that you took from the witness?"
"Yes? Why?" I played dumb, I knew damn well he noticed it looked like Adam.
"Is this not literally your boyfriend?" Tony continued.
"The car description wasn't even close to what Adam drives, and Adam was still at work when all this happened. Either way, that's actually ridiculous, Adam could never do anything like this, he's a lawyer, remember?" I said to Tony.
Tony shrugged and handed me back the sketch. "Okay Jill, I believe you," As I reached put to grab it, Tony spoke again, "But I'm not so sure Gibbs will."
Just seconds later Gibbs walked over to us. "So, what did you get?"
"Just about everything you can get from a witness; suspect description, vehicle description, sketch of the suspect, even a possible license plate number. This lady was very helpful," I replied. I silently prayed he wouldn't ask to see the sketch.
"Get a bolo out," He said and walked away.
I took a breath of relief and turned back to face Tony.
"Jill, you should show the rest of the team that sketch," Tony tried to reason with me. "Even if it's not Adam, they should know about it."
"Yeah Tony, I know, but I don't want them to overreact. I think I'm just gonna bring it to Abby and have her run facial recognition on it. Maybe Adam has some crazy serial killer doppelgänger." I said, looking back down at the sketch.
