Lapis opened the door to his room, setting the groceries down.
"You awake yet Ell?" He asked, before looking up and noticing both the broken window and the empty bed. Chills ran down his spine, and he ran outside. There was only one building in Treya that belonged to the king. It was an old court building, but nobody used it anymore. Knowing this was the only possible place they could take him, he ran as fast as his legs would take him. He ran inside the building and began searching.

After searching everywhere else, Lapis threw the old door open with all of his strength, searching the room for Ellis with his eyes. His face froze in terror as it locked on a figure in the center of the room.
"Ellis..." He whispered, fear filling his body. Ellis turned around and smiled warmly, his left hand clutching his gut, blood slowly dripping down and landing on the birchwood floor.
"I knew you'd come for me." He said weakly, his legs giving out from under him, and falling to the floor. Lapis ran over, picking his friend up and holding him in his arms. "Thank you, Lapis." He spoke softly, his eyes warm and filled with love. Lapis's chest ached, fear and regret flowing through him.
"It's gonna be okay... just give me a second... I'll get you fixed up Ell I promise.." He choked, warm salty tears welling up in his eyes. Ellis shook his head, smiling.
"It's not going to be alright, Lapis. I need you to understand, I'm going to die." His words were calm and quiet. Lapis shook his head, hugging him close.
"You can't die, Ell..." He said, running his fingers through the prince's hair. "People need you... We're gonna save the world... Remember...? Our happy ending?" He choked out the last words, feeling warm blood soak through his shirt.
"Maybe this is a happy ending..." Ellis whispered.
"How the hell is this happy." Lapis glared, holding back a sob.
"I get to die in the arms of the person I love."
"..."
"I love you Lapis." Ellis said, slowly closing his eyes. Lapis hugged Ellis tightly, Tears rolling down the sides of his face.
"I love you too Ellis... Please don't go..." He whispered desperately, feeling how slow his breathing was getting. Ellis relaxed completely, exhaling one final breath. Lapis's eyes widened, every inch of him wanting to scream. "Ellis...?" His heart thudded heavily in his chest as he lifted up Ellis's head. "No... Ellis... Please..." He shook him lightly, crying even harder. "I'll go to the capitol with you... I'll take you to the garden again... Please just wake up..." It was no use. Ellis was dead.

Lapis had lost people before, sure, but it had never felt like this. Usually, he felt empty, but now everything just hurt. It wasn't fair that Ellis had to die. He should've saved the world, but someone took his future from him.

And this someone would pay.
