Present day.

Hell.

Maxine looked down. Loona wiped away a tear as Maxine finished telling her story.

After they had met at the bar, Maxine had brought Loona back to her apartment.

Maxine cleared her throat. "After I arrived in Hell, I got a job and was able to save up for this place."

Loona was silent for a minute before asking a question. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"What?" Maxine asked.

"Why didn't you tell me? About the marriage?

"How was I supposed to tell you? Just randomly bring up 'oh yeah, I'm gonna get married to some rich prick soon without my permission and I might not see you again'?" Maxine said, starting to feel defensive.

Loona was beginning to feel the same way. "I don't know, but you should have said something to me."

"Yeah, we'll you should have told me that you were a DEMON from literal HELL!" Maxine shouted, making Loona flinch.

"Maxine, I-"

"Can you even IMAGINE how I felt when I saw you at the bar and learned that you never were a human at all?! That you were a demon our entire relationship??"

Tears were running down Maxine's cheeks, and she hiccuped from her sobs.

Heartbroken, Loona grabbed Maxine and hugged her to her chest. Maxine didn't resist.

"It's ok," Loona whispered as she held Maxine.

After a little while, Maxine stopped crying. "Can... can we both admit that we fucked up?"

Loona laughed dryly. "Yeah, that works."

Maxine smiled and nuzzled her face against Loona's breasts. "This feels nice."

Loona smiled and continued to hug Maxine. A few minutes later, she heard Maxine softly snoring.

Heh. She must have been pretty tired.

Careful as not to wake Maxine up, Loona picked her up and carried her to the bedroom.

In the bedroom, Loona set Maxine down and tucked her in.

Just as Loona was about to leave the bedroom and sleep on the couch, she heard Maxine whisper something in her sleep.

"I... love you... Loona..."

Loona smiled.

"I love you too, Maxine."

———

The next day.

Maxine awoke to the smell of burning and the sound of Loona cursing.

"Loona?" Maxine called out, getting out of bed and heading for the kitchen.

In the kitchen, Maxine saw Loona dumping water on a flaming metal box-shaped item. Only after the fire went out did Maxine realize what it was.

"Is that my toaster?" Maxine asked.

Loona blushed sheepishly. "Y-Yeah."

"How the hell did you destroy my toaster?!"

Loona looked down, embarrassed. "I... wanted to make breakfast for you, and I started with the toast... everything is a blur but one second everything was fine and the next it was on fire and-"

Loona was interrupted by Maxine pushing her back into a chair at the kitchen table. "How about I make breakfast instead, yeah?"

"Y-Yeah."

———

After Maxine had prepared the food and the two of them had eaten, Loona insisted on cleaning the dishes.

After she finished, Loona felt Maxine hug her from behind. Remembering just how much she loved the feeling of Maxine's body on her own, Loona melted into her touch.

"Loona?"

"Hmmm?"

"What are we?" Maxine asked.

"Well, I'm a Hellhound and you're a fox dem- ow! Hey!" Loona laughed as Maxine lightly punched her in the side.

"I mean... after what we've done," Maxine said, "what does that make... us?"

Loona smiled. "Do you want us to be a couple?"

There was a beat of silence before Maxine answered.

"...yes."

Loona turned around to Maxine and leaned in. Maxine leaned in as well, and they kissed.

After the kiss ended, Loona appeared lovestruck. "That feels... different."

Maxine giggled. "It works for me."

———

Later.

Of course, Loona had to go to work, so after a goodbye kiss from Maxine, she went to the IMP headquarters.

Blitzo looked up when his daughter walked in. "Where were you all night, Loonie? Did you meet someone while you were out?"

Loona smiled a bit. "Yeah. I did."

Blitzo felt his heart warm. Even though it was small, this was the first time that he had seen Loona smile in a year. She was finally getting back to her normal self.

For the first time in a long time, it felt like everything was getting back to the way it used to be.

———

Later.

The IMP crew was out on a mission, and Loona was by herself.

Sitting at her desk, Loona was spending time on her phone when a curious thought suddenly occurred to her.

Putting her phone down, Loona started up the computer in front of her. After the computer turned on, Loona opened the search engine and typed in the website for the local newspaper in the town where Maxine lived.

One press of the enter key later, the page loaded and Loona was greeted with the title of the front page article. It wasn't what Loona was looking for, and a few clicks later, Loona was looking at articles from last year. After a bit of scrolling down, Loona found the article that she was looking for.

Break In Leaves Husband Wounded And Wife Dead

Earlier this morning, Lucas Wilkes, the son of successful businessman Johnathan Wilkes, called the police after he and his newlywed wife were attacked during the night. According to Wilkes, a group of masked intruders broke into his and his wife's honeymoon home, after which they attacked him and raped and murdered his wife, Maxine Wilkes.

Loona couldn't finish the article when tears clouded her eyes. She had been in horrified disbelief when Maxine had told her story, and she needed to prove to herself that it was true and that it hadn't just been a horrible nightmare.

Unfortunately, it was true.

The article contained a photo of Maxine and Lucas on their wedding day. Loona glanced at it, and was filled with a sudden rage when she saw Lucas' face.

This is the man that hurt her. This is the man that hurt Maxine.

Loona closed the tab and turned off the computer before resting her head on her desk, her fists clenched in fury.

He hurt her.

Sweet, loving Maxine.

He hurt her.

Beautiful, kind Maxine.

He deserves to feel the pain that she felt.
