The morning after the trip to the club, Maxine was making breakfast for herself when she got a call from Jade.

"Hey hey!" Jade said.

"Hey, Jade." Maxine yawned.

"So what's the deal with you and that chick from the club? You guys going out or something?" Jade asked

"GOD, Jade!" Maxine blushed. "It's not like that! We just hit it off and she gave me her number!"

"I'm sorry, but this is just so exciting to me! I swear to god I wouldn't have tried to hook you up with that dude in high school."

Maxine laughed at the memories. "In hindsight, it was pretty funny."

"Still, I'm glad that I can finally talk with you about girls, cause trying to talk to you about guys was exhausting."

Despite Maxine being closeted her entire life up until three weeks ago, Jade Austin had been out, loud, and proud most of her life. During their time in high school, everyone knew Jade as the scary lesbian girl who would beat the shit out of anyone who so much as made Maxine feel uncomfortable.

In high school, Maxine had been the quiet, lonely type. Which meant that she was often the target of bullying.

But when Maxine befriended Jade, Jade not only became the best friend she ever had, but Jade protected Maxine from any bullies.

And Maxine was eternally grateful for that.

"Speaking of..." Jade said, breaking Maxine out of her thoughts. "Have you talked to your parents about... you know?"

Maxine groaned. "No. And even if I did, they wouldn't listen."

"It's seriously fucked up that they're doing this," Jade said.

"I know, it's so-" Maxine sighed. "Let's just talk about something else."

Friday night.

Maxine sat on her bed and looked back and forth between the slip of paper that Loona had given her and Maxine's cell phone.

After what felt like hours of looking back and forth between the two items, Maxine picked up her phone and dialed Loona's number. After three rings, Loona picked up.

"Who are you and what the hell do you want?" Maxine heard Loona say.

Maxine was taken aback by Loona's hostility. If she's this way with strangers, why was she so nice to me?

"Um, it's Maxine..." Maxine said.

She heard Loona yelp in surprise. "Oh fuck! I'm so sorry!! Let me start over. Hey, Maxine. What's up?"

Maxine couldn't help but giggle. "I... I just wanted to call you so that you could put my number in your phone, and..." Maxine's voice got quieter as she said the next part. "I guess I also wanted to say that I'm excited to see you tomorrow..."

Maxine squeezed her eyes shut and blushed. Oh lord, why the fuck did I say that? She's gonna think I'm so weird and-

"I'm excited to see you too, Maxine."

Maxine felt her heart stop when she heard Loona say that. "R-Really?"

"Y-Yeah!" Loona said. "I'm glad that I got to meet you and I can't wait to get to get to know you more."

By then, Maxine was just about going to explode out of excitement. "T-Thank you... I-I gotta go! I'll see you tomorrow!"

Maxine hung up the phone before Loona could reply.

And although neither knew it, at the same time both women fell onto their respective beds, grinning.

The next day.

Loona looked up and smiled as she saw Maxine enter the club.

Maxine smiled back and the two of them sat down at the bar.

"How've you been?" Loona asked as she ordered drinks for her and Maxine.

Maxine sighed and took a swig of her drink. "Exhausting. There have been some hiccups in getting my book published and things and my parents have been super shitty."

Loona placed a comforting hand on Maxine's arm. "Don't worry. You're not the only one with parent issues. Do you wanna tell me about it?"

Maxine looked at her new... friend... and felt comforted by her kindness. "They're-"

"Hey, cutie!" A gruff voice from behind Loona said, cutting Maxine off.

Loona turned around and looked back to see a man maybe a few years older than her and Maxine grinning disgustingly at Maxine.

"You here by yourself? Someone as pretty as you?" the man said.

Maxine shrank away and Loona, pissed off, stood up. "She's with me, fuckwad."

The man glared at her. "Wasn't talking to you, bitch. I was talking to her."

"Can't you see she's not interested?" Loona said, venom in her voice.

The man scoffed. "I just think she'd rather spend her real night with a man and not a fucking fag."

"MOTHERFUCKER!" Loona yelled and punched the man straight across the face.

He stumbled back. When he looked back at Loona, blood was running down from his nose.

"STUPID CUNT!" He roared and tackled Loona.

"LOONA!" Maxine screamed as she watched Loona and the man trade vicious blows on the ground. Many other bar patrons began cheering on the fight.

When Maxine saw Loona's face, she saw tons of bruises and scratches. And a fierce determination in her eyes.

Loona's eyes met Maxine's for a moment. And at that moment, Loona mouthed a word to Maxine.

"Glass".

Maxine immediately understood. She grabbed Loona's glass of alcohol and tossed it to Loona.

Grinning, Loona caught the glass and smashed it against the man's head. He collapsed, unconscious, and Loona jumped up.

"SUCK IT, BITCH!" Loona yelled at him as the other people in the bar cheered.

–––

"Loona. Hold still."

After the fight, Maxine took Loona back to her house to help her clean up. At the moment, Maxine was pressing ice to Loona's bruises.

Loona was jittery. "That fucker was so annoying. He deserved what he got."

"Yes, yes," Maxine said while applying another Band-Aid to Loona's forehead.

Loona smiled at Maxine. "Thanks for bringing me here to clean me up. Your house is lovely."

Maxine blushed slightly. "Y-Yeah."

After Maxine had finished, Loona stood up. "I'm sorry, I should probably head back home now. My dad is probably freaking out."

Maxine also stood up as Loona made her way to the door. "W-Wait!"

Before Loona could leave, Maxine walked up to her.

And she kissed Loona on the cheek.

Loona's face exploded in a crimson blush.

Maxine was also blushing. "T-Thanks for standing up for me. I'll see you next week, okay?"

–––

That night, Loona lay in her bed, reaching up to touch her cheek where Maxine kissed her. She had touched that same spot seventy-two times in the last hour.

Loona smiled and her heart fluttered.

Maybe I need to get in bar fights more often.
