Chapter 8

The human world.

Jade had cried for ages when she heard about what happened to Maxine.

Maxine had been Jade's best friend for years, and losing Maxine made Jade feel like a chunk of who she was had been ruthlessly torn out.

But it didn't just hurt because Maxine was Jade's friend.

It hurt because Jade saw Maxine as more than a friend.

Eight years ago.

Jade hated Sebastian White very, very much.

Which was ironic, considering that she was the one who had suggested that Maxine ask him out.

Sebastian had had a crush on Maxine all year, and anyone could see that. Of course, that lead to Jade jokingly telling Maxine that she should ask him out.

Unfortunately, Maxine had taken Jade seriously.

And now Maxine was dating that asshole.

Usually, this probably wouldn't have been a problem, but the fact that Jade herself also had feelings for Maxine made this extra hard to swallow.

Jade had been friends with Maxine for much longer than this asshole had even known her, and it just wasn't fair that he got to be with her and Jade didn't.

God, what she would give to have the opportunity to punch that asshole in the face.

Two months later.

Jade's fist connected with Sebastian's jaw with a satisfying crack that was no doubt heard throughout the school.

A crowd was already forming around the two of them, chanting for a fight. Somewhere beyond them, Jade could hear Maxine trying to yell over everyone to tell Jade to stop.

But everyone in school knew that once Jade was pissed, whoever was on her bad side was fucked.

And right now, Sebastian was fucked.

Jade grinned, the feeling of his jaw still fresh on her knuckles.

That felt good.

For a while, everything had seemed good between Maxine and Sebastian. However, all that ended the day before when during a school girls basketball game, one of the teammates went into the locker room and caught none other than Sebastian White making out with one of the cheerleaders.

By the time the game was over, the entire school knew that Sebastian had cheated on Maxine.

And oh boy, was Jade ever enraged.

A chant of "Fight!" was breaking out among the bystanders. But Jade didn't need them to remind her. While Sebastian, now on the floor, was trying to get back up, Jade swung her foot into his stomach, causing him to fall right back down.

"Jade!"

Jade turned, the sound of Maxine's voice closer than before. She saw her friend trying to move through the crowd without much success.

Suddenly, Maxine's face showed a look of worry.

"Look out!"

Jade barely had time to look back at Sebastian when he punched her hard across the face.

Stunned, Jade stumbled backward, attempting to steady herself against a locker. With one hand steadying herself, she lifted the other to her hurting nose.
