"Well...no, I guess you've never really given me your autobiography," answers the ringtail.
"It was from an incident when I was eight years old," I begin. "It's a memory so rough on me I try not to think about it, but after our fights, I can't see a way forward without bringing it up. So here it is.
I was really close with my grandmama in my childhood. We just always understood each other. Crazy thing was, we were pretty rebellious. Both of my parents were pretty no-nonsense but I had...kind of the mind of a thief."
Sly's eyes open wider than I've ever seen them. I can't blame him. Some of the pranks my grandmother and I pulled, and our devious but loving cackles of laughter to each other as we gorged on Mexican chocolate...
"Anyway, my grandmama got sick when I was eight, and we all knew she was dying. Before she did though, she gave me this necklace. I can still sort of see it. It was pure gold with a diamond encased in it, and its cover had the symbol of a fox protecting a wounded turtle."
"Like Bentley," Sly muses.
"Kind of a coincidence," I say, quickly returning to the subject. I'm not really in the mood for pleasantries, and the ringtail's about to find out why. "She said the necklace had been a Fox legacy for centuries. It signifies a fox using her strength and intuition to stand against a much taller foe, protecting the vulnerable and not letting anyone else dictate you. My parents actually objected to her leaving that necklace to me, but she put it specifically in her will, with a condition that they may not have anything if I wasn't given the necklace. My parents had no choice.
