Jung Kook rolled his eyes as his cousin continued to scold him like he was a kindergartner. Despite his best efforts to decline the earlier invitation from Yoon Gi's husband, his presence had been requested -- nay, demanded -- by Yoon Gi's assistant, and he had been told in no uncertain terms that refusal was futile so he had duly turned up to his cousin's home for dinner. He tried to make his escape after finishing his meal but Yoon Gi insisted that he come to his study for a discussion.
A discussion which turned into a lecture about driving and the responsibilities that came with it. Jung Kook tried to ignore Yoon Gi's reprimand but as his cousin droned on and on, Jung Kook became offended. He was an adult, for goodness sake! A renowned heart and trauma surgeon! So why did he have to sit here and listen to all this drivel?
Oh yeah, Jung Kook suddenly remembered. Because I just crashed my car for the third time in less than a year.
In his defence, Jung Kook was trying to avoid a cat that had dashed in front of his car that morning. It wasn't his fault that the bloody thing was kamikaze. The other two times? That was not Jung Kook's fault either. It was that man. The one he tried to forget.
He who shall remain nameless.
He who still had the power to mess with Jung Kook's mind at unexpected moments. He who Jung Kook has been thinking about frequently since he came home after being abroad for many years.
Thinking about that man always pushed all reasonable thought from Jung Kook's head until all he could see in his mind's eye was that man's beautiful face and gorgeous body. He hated that man, and he hated how that man was still able to affect him after all these years. Even now he thought he had seen him again which proved Jung Kook would be wise to double his efforts to forget him.
Jung Kook was glad that he'd suffered no serious injuries this morning. The air bags had deployed the way it was supposed to because it saved him from what would have been a painful clash with his steering wheel and dashboard. He thought he'd blacked out after the initial impact because everything went dark when his car came to a stop but he soon realised it was simply the safety devices obscuring his view.
He was also grateful that he did not sustain any abrasion to his face when the front bag inflated to cushion his head because he was quite fond of his nose. It had been his Ji--
Stop it, Jung Kook!
He shook his head as if to purge unpleasant memories and was reminded once again of his current predicament. His car had sustained major front end damage after it collided with a concrete bollard at the side of the road and he wasn't happy because it left him without transportation while his insurance company assessed if his vehicle was recoverable. It was quite an inconvenience because the other two times he had pranged his car, it did not require any extensive body work. Just some minor paint touch-ups with a bit of buffing and he was able to drive his vehicle again.
He wondered if he could talk his cousin's husband into lending him his car. Ji Min drove a bright yellow John Cooper Works Mini. It resembled a baby chick, and while small roadsters weren't exactly Jung Kook's cup of tea, he could be persuaded to use one for the foreseeable future until his insurance either fixes his car or writes him a cheque towards the purchase of a new replacement. After all, desperate times called for desperate measures.
"Jung Kook! Are you listening to me?!"
"Yes..."
"So we are agreed then?"
"Yeah..."
"Good. You're not scheduled to be back at work until the week after. That will give me time to make arrangements with Hobi to switch my new driver to you."
"Sur--" Wait, what? A driver?? For me?! Jung Kook was sure he heard his cousin wrong. "Excuse me? What are you talking about?"
"You're banned from driving until I see fit. You will have a driver take you to and from work every day. Ji Min and I will drive you everywhere else," Yoon Gi announced.
"What?! That's outrageous! I'm an adult! I'm licensed to drive!"
"Not in my eyes, you're not."
"You can't stop me!" Jung Kook was almost apoplectic with rage at his cousin's high-handedness.
"I can, and I will. I shall make it known to all the hospital employees that you are prohibited from getting behind the wheel of a car if you insist on going against my orders."
"You're not the law! You have no power over me! I don't remember anyone electing you sheriff!"
"You forget that I own the hospital where you work. I am your boss. I am also your guardian. I can do whatever the hell I want for a few more years. Your parents' last will and testament made it so. You have no choice but to accept it."
There was a satisfied smirk on Yoon Gi's face as he reminded Jung Kook of the position he was in. Jung Kook frowned, and it was fierce. His frown was famous for sending a normal person fleeing for their life whenever he directed it at them but his cousin was not a normal person.
Yoon Gi was not owner of one of the top hospitals in the country for nothing. Rumour had it that it was easier to get blood, sweat, and tears from a rock than from the man. The only person that could move him was his husband - Park Ji Min. Legend said that Yoon Gi even smiled once when Ji Min teased him. But no one saw this elusive smile so it remained a lore to this day, whispered in dark corners and at water coolers.
"So what will it be, Jung Kook? A driver of my own choosing, or will you carpool with one of your juniors at the hospital? Choose wisely," Yoon Gi's voice was firm and uninviting.
"Fine! I'll take the driver. But mark my words, if he displeases me, he's out and I get to drive again!" Jung Kook snarled before stomping off to the entryway and banging the front door shut so hard that a shoe cabinet popped and spilled a pair of orange trainers to the floor.
Another door opened on the other side of the condo, and a handsome petite man tiptoed out, wary eyes shifting from side to side in case Jung Kook returned.
"When are you going to tell him who his driver is, sugar bear?" Ji Min asked when he reached his husband.
Yoon Gi had told Ji Min about encountering Jin at the airport. His beloved had been shocked at the news. He'd never met Jin but he knew of him and had often wondered what happened to the lad the night he disappeared from Jung Kook's life ten years ago.
Yoon Gi's stomach twisted nervously at the question. He'd been avoiding thinking about it.
When indeed?
