Prince James had never met Eden before, but when he saw his “mate” coming down the aisle at the orphan graduation, he felt overwhelmingly ashamed of her. Thoughts ran through his mind like "How could his mate be an orphan? Why was she orphaned? Did her parents think so little of her to give her away? Why would I want someone no one else did?"
After catching her similar scent of cinnamon, orange and honey, Prince James then watched the tearful goodbye between Eden and her brother. At first James was unsure who Aiden was to Eden as he cried to her. Just as Aiden had cleared the courtyard he flung himself to the ground wailing "Sister, you're all I have! Please come with me!"
Prince James’s heart was panging inside his chest. He wanted to go to his mate to comfort her. However, he was just too embarrassed to be her mate no matter how much he felt drawn to her.
Prince James could not take an orphan as his mate as his parents had already chosen one for him. For years his marriage had been arranged to the princess in a neighboring kingdom of Everguard. His father will step down as King in a few months when James turns 21, and then James will be crowned King.
The Prince has nothing against the Everguard Princess. She is a pretty girl, but he doesn't love her. It's a duty he has to fulfill for his family, and to keep their kingdom alliances.
Before Eden had the chance to move from her place in front of the platform on the lawn, Beta Brady stepped directly in front of her and placed his hand on her shoulder. "It's ok to change your mind now if you want to pick an easier task." He says consoling Eden. In one last attempt to keep this tiny girl out of his warrior's unit, he bargains "There's a place in the kitchen that I could take you to right now."
Eden turned from sorrow to fury in those very short seconds. She balled her hands into little tiny fists at her side and straightened her back. Then she lifted her head and glared from the top of her eyelids at him. They flashed like fire and she spoke in a low tone "NO, Sir!"
Beta Brady jerked backwards and swiftly took his hand off her shoulder in shock. Then he cleared his throat, and said sternly "Come on then. Let's get your things. I have a room for you in the warrior house."
Before escorting the new warrior kids to the warriors house, Beta Brady had to allow the kids to get their luggage from the steps of the orphanage. He stood a few yards away with his arms folded across his chest wondering where he had seen this tiny girl before. She seemed a little familiar.
Eden gave Mrs. Winters a big hug and they said her tearful goodbyes with the rest of the kids. Then Eden turned her attention to the Beta who nodded at Mrs. Winters for her time.
On the way to the warrior house it dawned on him who Eden was. She was the little child who was always mimicking the warriors during training. He watched this little girl grow up over the years, but he barely got a good look at her because she stayed hidden so well in the woods. Now the time had come for her to show her stuff. He grinned proudly from ear to ear, and led them on to the warrior house, but never said a word about what he knew.
